One of my boards are becoming a problem for my host.
I just don't get it. The board has 144 members, at the most it's been 78 logged on at once and the nedstat statistics that I have in the footer shows that the most pageviews we've had was 10 006 in a day.
Still; my host tells me that we have 1.5 million pageviews per month and need to be on a dedicated server.
How can that be? Could it be something wrong here?
The rankimages or the smilies, maybe?
I'm a mother and student and this board is my hobby. I don't know if I can afford to pay for a dedicated server. :(

Well, you might want to try moving to a different host. I run www.modtheater.com (http://www.modtheater.com) on www.siteturn.com (http://www.siteturn.com) and they havnt complained at all, even though the site should probably be on a deticated machine. If you could provide a link to your board, I might be able to give you some optimization tips on how to save bandwidth, space, etc.

I dont understand the language obviously, but looking at the numbers I would have to say that you probably need to find a new host. Depending on who your current host is, your probably asking a lot if your running virtual hosting account. I would still recomend www.siteturn.com (http://www.siteturn.com) or maybe a virtual account from www.rackshack.net (http://www.rackshack.net) or venturesonline.

Here's the statistics:

Here's the statistics:
Keep in mind that page impressions are NOT visits; simply how many times any page on your web site was loaded.
Each time you visit a topic it's another page impression; replying is another, and then going back to the topic after you reply is another. That makes at least 5 (including the index and then finding the thread) page impressions per reply.
Now take into consideration 144 people doing this regularly and you get a pretty big number. Add in guests and the rest of your web site, and you've got quite an active site.
What you need to be concerned about is your Bandwidth Usage; if that's not too high, then you needn't get a dedicated server, really....
Edit: And I see that you've used up about 47GB of bandwidth in the month of May, and seem to be consistantly growing....a dedicated server may be a good idea; 50GB of bandwidth is a good chunk, though I've got 200GB to use. :)

Hits is the # of file requests per day. This includes every single file on the page, even files that are cached. In other words, if someone visits your forum, chances are they generate 100 Hits, and if they reload, that's another 100 hits, even if they are just viewing a cached copy.
Visits is the # of unique IP addresses (with a default granularity of 30 minutes) visiting the site per day. So one person could rack up 48 visits a day. Still, I'd say that you're talking 1,500-3,000 unique visitors a day generating 1.5GB of traffic a day or 45GB a month.
A reasonable web hosting bill for this amount of traffic is approximately $100 USD a month.

I have a related question. If someone links to, say, an image or even an article/post on your site from someone elses site does it increase the views on your site when the linked item is viewed/accessed on the other site that is doing the linking?

Kie: sounds to me your host is trying to just make you shell out for a dedicated as it is a slower computer then your host claims to have and you are eating up the server resources. Most likely, they just have a reseller account on someones server and you are reaching thier quota for the package they bought. When running a forum, It is important to go with a host you know owns the server and not just a reseller account.
Ron: yes that would still count as it still uses your bandwidth. Once you get moved over to us (as I know you just signed up) you can turn off hot linking in your cPanel. This prevents people from leetching your bandwidth.

Kie, yeah it sounds like you're just getting the run around. I have less members than you but get more traffic; like previously mentioned it sounds like their server can't hack it; as long as you're within your allowed bandwidth there should never be a problem.
