Has anyone done this?

I have no idea what the database is like for vBulletin but with over 3000 registered users on our board and lots and lots of posts I really don't want to lose any data or have to do a LOT of work by hand. The MWP database has a separate Topic table and Reply table. Will I be able to import the data complete with the autonumber field? What is the date stored as... currently my date is stored as 20030509143500

Will I be able to export all my data, import into Excel and edit (I've done this a LOT in the past to quickly edit things for MS Access...), export back to a text file and then import into mysql like that?

Is there any kind of add-on for separate articles? You can see what this kind of site is like at www.maxwebportal.com - there are news articles where the admin can check a box to designate it as a news article to show up on the main page. Separate from that is the articles section. I'd really like to keep that function. I think I could do this with something like phpnuke but most of the sites I've seen are pretty overwhelming with all the stuff on the page (even *I* sometimes have a hard time navigating them, can't imagine the users on our site...) so I'd really like to go with vBulletin and something like vbhome(lite).

I am a complete newbie with php and mysql so I'm hoping there's already something out there. :D

BTW - I think every site I visit on a halfway regular basis (besides the one I'm running) is using vBulletin :)
