Did your friend HAVE a my.cnf file before the upgrade?
Its not created by default.

yeap..definitely..my friend mysql was 3.23.52 ..and the my.cnf was in /etc/my.cnf....but solely after upgraded...it seemed it wasn't there anymore...should i create one new my.cnf and put back in /etc/ ?...coz as far as i know...in doing replication the my.cnf file just a vital one....

hai...i solve my problem...it seem that in mysql 4.0.12 it no longer my.cnf in /etc but i have to copy my-large.cnf from support-files folder to /etc and rename it to my.cnf.then my replication goes well....
