I ask because I just got a very peculiar email from someone trying to sell me a vB addon....

Here's what it says:

Subject: vBulletin Add-On Released

Dear vBulletin Owner,

Email Edition 1.0 is a 3rd-party add-on script for your vBulletin forums.
It allows your users to subscribe to daily email editions of active threads
in forums of their choices. This new software addition is different than
the current "forum subscriptions" already featured in vBulletin.

Email Edition provides a single email on a daily or hourly basis at a user
defined time. This is a fantastic way for your current user base to stay in
touch with what is happening on the message board through email, even if
they don't have time to visit on a daily basis. Forum owners like yourself
have seen additional daily postings and more frequent visits from those
users using Email Edition.

It is easy to install, it only takes about 5 minutes. If this interests
you, we encourage you to take a look to see if it is right for you. Demo
and screen shots available.

Hmm... so how did he get the data? I guess he must of used some sort of email harvester or something on the this board?

Email addresses are not available unless:

(a) You post it in a thread
(b) Respond to an email that another forum user sends you
(c) Post it in your signature

I got the same email myself... I would assume he got your forum address by going to the link directory and sent you an email because you have a 'Contact Us' link on the bottom of your forums...

Hmm.... yea, that must have been what happened. It's really, really annoying.

I also got one, I say we send him an e-mail from every member at the boards saying his product is soon useless.

That would only give the spammer an even bigger mailing list.

Forward a copy of the email to: abuse@arsalon.net , and abuse-mail@wcom.com . That is his hosting company and thier upstream.

You can also report it here (http://mail-abuse.org/rbl/reporting.html)
