vBulletin 2.3.0 Released vBulletin 3 Progress Report vBulletin available in German(This is *not* an April Fools' day joke!)

--------------- VBULLETIN 2.3.0 RELEASED -----------------

After extensive testing and bug-hunting and three release-candidate versions, on March 31st 2003, Jelsoft released the 'stable' version of vBulletin 2.3.0. It is our aim to make this the final outing for the vBulletin 2.x series, allowing the developers to dedicate all efforts to preparing vBulletin 3.0 for the forthcoming public beta program. Of course, if serious bugs are discovered in vBulletin 2.3.0 before vBulletin 3 becomes our stable production release, we will endeavour to release a fixed version as soon as possible, as has always been our policy.

This release fixes several bugs, although none of these are security-related, nonetheless we recommend that all customers upgrade their forums to this latest version.

One of the interesting new features included in vBulletin 2.3.0 is the ability to add an image-based verification system to your member registration system. This works by putting an image on the registration page, containing a string of numbers and letters. Registering members must enter the string that they read from the image into a form field. This system is designed to alleviate problems that some boards have been having with automated web robots signing up multiple members for the purposes of spamming the boards. The image-based verification system requires that PHP on your server is compiled with support for the GD image library. We recommend that you use the built-in GD libraries included in PHP 4.3.1.

For complete information about this new release, including upgrade instructions, please read the vBulletin 2.3.0 release announcement:

-------------- VBULLETIN 3 PROGRESS REPORT ---------------

The vBulletin 3 private beta program has been running for several weeks now, with selected boards running the latest vBulletin 3 code as their production software. Progress is good and a good number of bugs have been identified and resolved. The number of bug reports is slowing to a
trickle now, and we are confident that we will be able to proceed to the public beta stage soon.

Before we release the code to all customers who want to run vBulletin 3 in its beta stage, developer attention will shift to the language system. Although the language system is complete and working, it remains to convert all the text in the templates and the control panels to actually use the language / phrasing system, so we will be aiming to get this one as soon as possible so that those people who want to work with the language system can do so, and produce language packs in time for the final release of vBulletin 3.

The development team is also concentrating on fixing any additional bugs that crop up, and on making final optimizations to the database schema, such as optimizing queries and altering/removing/adding indices as needed.

We are also in the process of removing any remnants of code left in for PHP 3.x compatibility, as the minimum PHP version for vBulletin 3 will be PHP 4.0.6 (although we highly recommend that you use PHP 4.3.x).

The vBulletin 3 documentation project is now well underway, being headed up by Kevin 'Tubedogg' Schumacher. At present their efforts are directed towards the new inline help system integrated into the vBulletin 3 Admin Control Panel.

Also of note is the fact that vBulletin.com has recently been upgraded to use MySQL 4, now that version 4 has been declared stable. We are pleased to report a noteworthy speed improvement, and would recommend the upgrade to anyone running vBulletin.
