I am looking to build a dual processor server. I am debating between Xeon 2.4 gighz processors, or Athlon 2.13 processors. Which is better?
I have a budget 0f $2,700.

GHz to GHz, I think a 2.13GHz Athlon is faster than a 2.4GHz P4.

Xeon - don't even consider AMD for webservers

Xeon - don't even consider AMD for webservers I have to agree with you Dave#.
The number of web sites that I hear replacing their Xeon's due to whatever reason, has yet to happen. While I have heard numerous sites announcing their upgrade of their (dual) amd's on several occassions.
My personal experience with amd is .. eventually moved to dual xeon.
My personal experience with xeon is .. still good.
The performance stays high, they work better together, better balanced, and for some reason you don't need a big air-conditioning system on top of the cpu. Which yeah.. in a 19" rack packed with other systems below and above it, turns into an issue. I have had friends who wanted to stay cheap and got amd and their site has been down several times because the box couldn't pull the temps.

i'd go with dual xeon seems that everyone is these days.... but right now my vB forum is on a Dual AthlonMP 2000+ web server... been flawless since the beginning... server was built at racksaver.com

I used to be loyal towards AMD and at one point i would not use anything other than an AMD proccessor but i started to realize that all of my AMD processors have not lasted long at all, i don't understand how anyone can reccomend AMD proccessors when really they are complete crap and they don't last long at all.
The reason is because they have a tendancy to overheat, also doesn't this explain why the majority of computer manufactuers such as Dell Gateway and Packard Bell all mainly use Intel proccessors?
And yes i always make sure they have good CPU cooler fans on them but still....
I'd reccomend an Intel XEON definatly or maybe a dual Intel P4 3ghz with hyper threading technology would be just as sufficiant.

do you run on site, or somewhere else?
Yes, I now think Xeons are the better choice as I have done some research on the two, and the general consensus is that Xeons do last longer than MPs. Thanks guys.

i assume you mean to ask 'do i run one site' ? or am i hosted on site ?
my dual athlonMP 2000+ is colocated at http://effectonline.com - server serves 250-400k visitors/month for 12 web sites + 1 vB forum (800+k posts, 8k members and 100+k private messages)
FYI, server has been up online for 8+ months too

I am very happy with my Dual Xeon. Stable machine, and running the "top" command and watching the Hyperthreading work is good for entertainment too.
I have used AMD servers in the past, but no dual AMD's, so I really cannot compare performance between the two.
