write a hack

I want to develop some hack like instant messaging .
Can anybody give me some direction on how to write a hack ?
e.g. how to communicate the variables from vb ?

Download the PHP Manual in Adobe Acrobat format and read it. It will tell you all about using variables, functions and the like.

Then once your done with that, study your vbCode. Look at how it talks to the database and how it retrieves templates.

Once you have done that read the vBulletin Manual located on this site. Print it out, glue it to your wall.

Study your Control Panel. Learn every little option and feature because most of what you might want to do could be done without hacks most likely.

Once done with all this then you can start safely playing with the code on a testboard using a separate database. Many people install this on their local Windows machines.
