Which do you think would have the best performance for vBulletin:

A shared server with 254 domains and a Dual Pentium III 850 processor or a dedicated server with only 1 domain (obviously) and a single Pentium 166 (32MB RAM)?

Both running Red Hat Linux 6.2, Apache 1.3.4, 5-DC3 & 10-T1; I'm not sure about the RAM on the shared servers.

Let me know if you could.

Thanks,
Cody Rush

Well that "dedicated server" is not really up to todays standards. So really you are simply talking about a normal shared server, or a VERY low grade dedicated server.

I am also not sure how well a database application would perform on such a slow machine with lack of ram. It probably would not do well.

That is the exact reason why I brought this thread up. The dedicated server is really low end (and low priced at only $59 a month.)

well if low end servers are what you want, i got a RaQ3 AMD K6 300 mhz with 32mb, 10gb hdd, 31 ips and 100gb/month for US$109/month from 4webspace/tera-byte.com - but you have to installl mysql and php4 yourself like i did or pay them to do it

they also have a RaQ4 AMD K6 450, 128mb, 2x 20gb eide hdd with 100gb/month for US$220/month with php4 on it but you still need to install mysql

my vB forum is sitting by itself on a Dual P3 800 (temp server)server right now and it ain't breaking a sweat at my lowly peaks of 80+ users.

A Pentium-166 with 32MB of RAM will not be able to run anything well, especially not a database application/web server. You need a minimum of 64 just to run the Linux OS / Apache / MySQL... and if you expect any traffic at all you'll need at least 128MB of RAM.
