For those of you who host yourselves at home, I'm interested in your internet connection.
What type of connection do you have and what are its speed specs? How many people do you usually have connected to you?
I have an aDSL connection with 256kbps upload. That would be okay for me, but I seem to keep getting disconnected lately :(

Get at least 1Mbps UP.

I've got a 1 Mbit SDSL connection. The site is mostly text-based, we've got compression set to "1," and have 325 users online as I'm posting this. The upload is somewhere around 25-35% utilized.
That help?

I'd also like to ask where you're located geographically and how much you pay...

Better than a direct answer: go to DSL Reports (http://www.dslreports.com) and do a search based on your phone number to get a list of those providers that offer service in your area. You may get things way cheaper (or way more expensive) than I do here in North Florida.

I'm also seeking potential alternatives to xDSL-related technology.

T1's have been the standard for a while -- 1.544 Mb/s lines that require a router, CSU/DSU (you can buy both on eBay for cheap -- good brands even!), and loads of money still. Best price I've seen is around $600/month, and that's only in certain parts of the country. One of my clients is going with the cheapest provider in his area and paying $300/month for a 384k line over a fractional T1, and he's only getting that rate because the same company is providing local and long distance phone service over the same line.
SDSL is good service if you qualify for it. If I could get a 1.5Mb/s line it would be $300/month, but as-is I'm limited by distance to a 1 Mb/s line. No biggie as that's enough.
ADSL in most places just isn't appropriate, as you don't have enough upstream bandwidth. 2 Mb/s down and 256k up is common. In some parts of the country you can get 8 Mb/s down and 2 Mb/s up for home-user rates -- I'd do that in a heartbeat if it was available here.
Cable would work, but most providers require that you get a business account if you're going to run your own server, and last time I checked no-one had business accounts available. I'd also worry about traffic on cable networks -- all providers tend to oversubscribe to some degree, but more people on cable lines seem to complain about this than on people who get their connectivity elsewhere.
Lemme see...There was an outfit who was offering (or planning on offering) 100Mb/s wireless connections in the bigger cities in Florida, but I believe they're out of business (were a nice employer for a while though -- great CCIE lab with all the super-sexy core-layer switches lying around begging to be played with).
Don't know where else you'll go, really. xDSL is the cost champion right now.
Doesn't mean someone won't come out with cheaper access via your power line or something next year -- just means that quality connections are still kinda pricy. Much better than they were a few years ago though, when a 1.5Mbit frame-relay line was the best deal at $950/month...

These Metropolitan Area Networks like Yipes seem to be pretty good, but I haven't been able to find a price anywhere on their website. Only reason I have aDSL is because it's pretty much the only option open to me here.

Im going to be hosting myself soon. I use an ASDL 512k/512k line, which should be enough for my small liquidninjas.com right now. I pay $40 a month for it. I can easily upgrade to 1024k/1024k for $80 a month, quite cheap for this area.
Liquidninjas.net is my personal server indevelopment. If i can just get SQL/Apache to work right together, it should be good to go.

You must mean SDSL then :)
