View Full Version : [fixed we hope] Goto New Post
Steve Machol
Mon 20th Jan '03, 8:52pm
In addition the 'Go to first new post' in the 'getnew' search arrows are no longer working consistently. Sometimes I go to the first new post and sometimes I go to the first post - even if it isn't new.

do you mean that showthread is taking you to the last post straight away?
Steve Machol
Thu 23rd Jan '03, 12:48pm
No, I mean the 'Go to first new post' arrow in the getnew search. I didn't put the (on showthread) in this title.

Thu 23rd Jan '03, 1:24pm
I'm open now 5 threads (with click on 'Go to first new post' in the getnew) and always see first new post, but not first post in thread.
P.S. If I'm correctly understand you :)

It seems to be working correctly today. It wasn't when I originally posted this three days ago.

Thanks for the promotion, but I'm no Developer. And my wife will confirm that I'm no GOD either. :)

Some of the getnew code got changed today, I really like the change Scott. Now after I've read the new post and go back to the getnew page, the arrow icon is gone from the ones I've read and new icons are added to any threads with new posts. This makes keeping up with new posts much easier. :)

seems to be working fine for me at the moment, no problem.
What do you mean it stopped working. The arrow dissapeared or its taking you to the wrong post?

After click on arrow I'm see first new post...

What do you mean it stopped working. The arrow dissapeared or its taking you to the wrong post? After reading the post, the arrows sometimes disappear and sometimes they stay. There doesn't seem to be a consistent pattern to it. This was working perfectly before, but not now.

Here's a pic from my getnew page. I have read everyone of the threads listed, yet the arrow has only disappear from two of the threads. A couple of days ago the arrows would have disappeared for all of these.

did you close your browser at any point?
If you close the browser it will remove the temporary cookies that are holding this data.

No I didn't.
Steve Machol
Fri 24th Jan '03, 2:04pm
FWIW it's stopped working completely now. None of the arrow icons are going away.
Edit: Actually 2 out of 23 topics did see the arrow go away. There doesn't seem to be any discernable reason why it only worked on two threads.

You aren't using your Back arrow to go back to the page sometimes and clicking on "get new" other times are you?
You need to click on "get new" to make the arrows disappear.
Steve Machol
Fri 24th Jan '03, 2:11pm
I've tried it both ways - no difference. A couple of days agi it was working perfectly either way.
Scott MacVicar
Fri 24th Jan '03, 2:15pm
i'm thinking some corrupt cookies then, try logging out then logging back in and see if it continues to do the same.

Click on GotoNew (the second button from the right in the navbar) Click on a thread in the list that has a [v] arrow button to view showthread Click on GotoNew again The arrow button from the thread you just read should have disappeared

I'll try the 'corrupted' cookie suggestion next.

Logging out and back in seems to have fixed the problem for now. The arrow now goes away both by clicking on the 'Back' button and with the 'View New Posts' button.

Okay Steve, post back if you have it happen again.

Now I click getnew button. Open all threads from result. When all threads opened once again click getnew button. And not all arrows disappear :(

I'm logout then login.
Opened getnew, then open each threads from result (2 new threads) and not all arrows disappear :(

What browser and version are you using? This info will help the Developers.
For my part I'm using IE 6.0 SP1 and logging out then back in fixed the problem.

I think, that when opens much threads at once the mechanism does not work. Because I have again opened all threads from getnew and not at all arrows have disappeared.

The problem has returned. The arrows are no longer going away consistently. I hope this is one of those things where we'll need to tell people to logout to fix.
In addition the proginal problem has returned - clicking on the arrow does not always take me to the first new post.

Sun 26th Jan '03, 7:04pm
Well it's stopped working completely again. :(

I'm moving this back to the Bugs forum and taking off the 'fixed' so a Developer can review it again.

Mon 27th Jan '03, 2:31pm
well the goto new post is related to the arrows since they work off the same cookie.
Can you look at the phpinfo script in the acp and pm me the conents of your $_COOKIE array that it shows. Make sure you've browsed a few forums and threads first.
Steve Machol
Mon 27th Jan '03, 5:33pm
I assume you mean the Admin CP for these forums and the HTTP_COOKIE output. It's on it's way.

Mon 27th Jan '03, 5:36pm
It's too large to PM. I'll send you an email.

ok steve, i've commited a fix which changes all the nasty non safe cookie characters into one character. It should work now, basically you were viewing too many threads and reaching the max IE cookie size :)

If to open at once all threads from 'goto new post' it should work whether or not?
When I have opened 5 of 5 threads 2 arrows have disappeared only.

Thu 30th Jan '03, 2:29pm
Don't know what to tell you. It's working perfectly for me now. This is most likely a browser and/or browser settings issue.
Steve Machol
Thu 30th Jan '03, 10:45pm
Sorry Scott - it stopped working again.

Fri 31st Jan '03, 1:31pm
I had to reboot my machine and now this is working again. However it the past is any indication it'll stop working again sometime tonight or tomorrow. I'll let you know.

steve i think your just viewing too many threads / forums. Thats the only problem with the system, the 4k IE cookie limit.
Steve Machol
Sun 2nd Feb '03, 11:41am
Yep, it's still working for now.
Scott, if that's the case then I'll just have to live with it I guess. It's unlikely that very many people will be reading as many threads as I do. Thanks.
Scott MacVicar
Sun 2nd Feb '03, 12:15pm
it will be fixed for the next vB version where we implement a database solution for thread marking
Steve Machol
Mon 3rd Feb '03, 11:45am
Just an update to say that it stopped working again. Too bad since this was a real nice feature.
Scott MacVicar
Mon 3rd Feb '03, 12:12pm
steve everytime it stops working can you send me a copy of your HTTP_COOKIE from the phpinfo here :)
are you doing anything before hand, like clicking mark all forums read or the mark forum read button?
Steve Machol
Mon 3rd Feb '03, 12:30pm
I'll send it to you again. I don't do anything unusual. I read all new messages then when I'm caught up I click on 'mark all forums read'. I do this for a day or two and everything works fine. Then all of a sudden some of the icons don't disappear until eventually they all stop working.
I think it's as you said - the cookies are reaching the 4k limit.
Steve Machol
Mon 3rd Feb '03, 12:33pm
Hmmm...the HTTP_COOKIE is not nearly as big as the last time. I'm sending this to you now.
