Need help adding Left Panel

Hello all. I have found ONE thread here in a quick search that gives me some BASIC code on how to put a left panel on my forums. I am looking for the Main Forums listing to the right with a panel to the left of that to put in Links, Banners, Adds, maybe move some of the site bits there also. I figured out how to make the panel by putting some code in the header and footer but I can't figure out how to actually put items in the panel. Can anyone throw up some example code that I can use, and expand upon.

www.fordforums.com or www.gmforums.com would be what I am talkign about, see how there are things set up on the LEFT side of the forums!
