Hi I need some advise on my hosting.

Currently I get the following monthly bill from VO....

Description Qty. Total
---------------------------------------- ------ ----------
V650 (Monthly)-wannabebigforums.com 1 64.95
V200 (Monthly)-wannabebig.com 1 16.95
Resold Account VR200 - 1 8.50
(domain name disclosed)
Resold Account VR20 - 1 3.95
(domain name disclosed)
Resold Account VR20 - (domain name disclosed) 1 3.95
----------
Invoice Total 98.30
----------
Previous Balance 0.00
----------
Balance Due $98.30

ok so just about 100 bucks a month

Today and yesterday I have been getting 1023 errors and max sql connection messages on my v650. This happened at about 70 users yesterday which was wierd because we normally managae that just fine and I have 100 sql connections on my v650. As I understand it 100 means concurrent so it could handle like 150 online right?

Our bandwidht for the month is currently at 10 gig on the v650 so estimated 20 gig final use for the month (using a 2/3 of the bw)

Our space on the account is 650. I cannot do a databse back up right now due to it causing a file write error due to lack of space :( I could back up tables seperatly but I don't really wanna do this :( So this needs to be sorted asap.

So what to do? Extra space seems to be alot on this account (10 bucks every 50 mb!!!) However maybe if I pre arrange it it might be less? I still have the max problem though?

I was thinking about Vo's VPS 2 at http://www.venturesonline.com/hosting/vps.html

This would give me the space I need, host ALL of my accounts and allow me scope to develop the v200 (domain name disclosed). This will be an ecommerce site and this will be db driven like wbb.com and wannabebigforums.com

Or... would you perhaps think I could go 2's in with someone on a dedicated for that money a month?

What would you do in my situation?

They currently featre some special dedicated servers, the cheapest one for $120 per month:

I would go dedicated...

Thing is thats another 35 for cpanel also so we are talking 155...

I suppose its only 20 bucks more. But I have to pay for hardward upgrades and stuff on a dedicated right?

155 a month is gonna stretch my budget, are they gonna be any more costs with it?

lol I need to do something.

I just got 293 max sql 1023 emails!

The reason that your'e getting SQL connections errors is because you have that Last 10 Discussion hack running on the main page.

So, there may be 50 users on your main site that are connecting to your forums SQL database. If you get 100 connections on your forums you should have no problems with 70 users online because only half of them will be active at any given time.

Solution for now? Remove the hack on the main site. :)

Long term solution? Get a dedicated server.

hmm its possible seeing as I don't only have it on the main page but also in each section pulling top 10's from that particular forum on the forums, I think I have 5 top 10's on my main site lol aswell as on the forums.

I don't really wanna remove them though, showever surely only 1 connection is used when someone on www.wannabebig.com pulls up a page.

I guess I need to find out if the vps will allow room for this. I know it does seperate resources better than the v650.

I'll get in touch with VO. I just got another 250 emails this morning lol

for the price you're gonna pay for their VPS you should just look for a dedicated server, it sounds like you're gonna need it eventually anyway.

Well, $135 for the vps2 (with cpanel) is gonna sting me as it is.

The dedicated at $120 means I have to pay $30 for a cpanel license which = $150 a month. Damn this game is getting expensive! I guess its only another 15 bucks.

Are they ANY more hidden costs involved in this? Does anyone have VO dedicated? Is 256 ram enough?

The server stats are:

866
IDE
40 gig
256 ram
50 gig bw
8 ip's

Someone with a dedicated server and experience please help me out! Eva?

Prince don't you have a vps? Is it 1 or 2?

I am not using VO anymore.

I am using www.atwebhost.com

ahhh any reason?

VO's support for me has been so so good I don't really want to leave them.

Oh the other reason I am not tempted to go to dedicated yet is they are only 886's whereas the vps2 is a better server and to be honest it should suit me fine resource wise.

VO has been a great host, I would recommend them to anyone. But once you out grow their virtual hosting they get a bit expensive. So, I looked around for a cheaper solution. :)

Also, I have heard a lot of complaints about their VPS accounts in their forums.

Not to put atwebhost down but they are brand new - I would wait a bit. Another server provider is www.fastservers.net.

But probably you can't compare both of them to VO's service...

You're right they are about one month old!

I was not making any recommendations either, I was just telling him that I no longer use VO and where I went.

So far, everything is good. They have had a few problems, but they resolved them within a timely manner.

I'm trying to leave them right now...

If you plan on having a moderately busy and popular forum (90+ members online at a time) they aren't the one...

PLUS their customer 'service' when there is a BIG problem is AWFUL.

I wouldn't reccomend them to anyone.

I'll pm you, prince...I started replying, and it started to sound like a total 'trash em' fest...

The short version is, I was impressed back when I had fewer members...now that I'm close to 10,000 members, they seem to have a hard time keeping up...

From time to time, my site shows up in the national press, and the traffic surge that is causes, also seems to trip them up, and my members and I pay the price by not being able to access the site.

Not impressed ONE bit.

What kind of an account do you have with them? 90 members online at one time is a bit much for any shared server.

i'm on the v650 and tried moving to a vps...wasn't impressed with that process...

As soon as the tech told me to hold while he paid the pizza delivery, and then asked if i could wait until he ate before he continued...I had had enough.

PcosKat - moving up to a VPS or dedicated server is a huge leap, especially if you haven't worked with Linux servers before. They also typically take a lot more time to setup - both VPS and dedicated servers... such that service activation can take much longer.

That said - you need at least a VO VPS2 which is a very bad price proposition IMO. 256MB RAM is a must to support that size, possibly more if your database is huge.

I have to agree with that. I no longer use them but when I was with them their service was second to none.

VO?

You are probably in the minority, because a lot of people only have good words about them including me.

I mean I chose to stay with them despite their costs were a bit more.

I was paying VO to move the sites from their shared solution to their own VPS, so I thought it was a fair assumption that they could handle it...(never assume - I'll take the blame for that one)

Speaking of databases...Smachol spent a TON of time the other night fixing a problem that was caused by the last VO shut down, and tonight when my tech was transferring files to the new host VO shut the site down again.

The only thing left to move was the database...which is now messed up AGAIN...

Like I said...I'm not impressed...it's great that you all have had stellar experiences with them...

Me...I can't wait to go.

From what you say It sounds like you are on Knockout, am I correct? I too am on the v650 and knockout has had some issues lately. I hope they get it sorted out soon.
