I have IE6, and I have set all the security settings to default, turned off my popup killer, and all popup windows STILL close themselves! However there is a weirder worser problem...take www.hostmatix.com for example [my host], clicking on live help brings up a popup window, now once it loads up, it closes the popup window, AND the hostmatix.com site! I have NO idea WHY this is happening, I've tried what I can! What can be doing this? It's severly annoying :(

Make sure your IE settings aren't set to go through a proxy (how most popup filters work).
Normally one wouldn't complain about having popups close themselves...;)

It isn't going through a proxy or anything.
Also, it isn't just closing popup windows! It's closing all windows that popup, ie. I click on a link to get to the live help chat window on my host's site, and it closes not only the popup, but the site aswell!!!

Do you have SP1 installed?

I did have a similar problem at one point: popup windows never opened (or links to open new windows), the status bar was all screwed up, other general weirdness. Because the browser is part of the os  I had to reformat.

I had SP1 installed but it had bugs with IE so I uninstalled it...

Would re-installing IE6 work?

It wouldn't let me re-install IE6. It said I have a later version installed, me thinks it means IE 6 SP1 but I uninstalled WinXP SP1, which contained IE6SP1, however I cannot remove IE6SP1, because I don't know where or how..

What about uninstalling IE first?

Isn't that risky? [I heard somewhere that it is ]

Dunno, neva had to do it before.... Maybe risky if you don't reinstall?

I dunno, but I just noticed, I can't remove IE from Control Panel, it isn't listed, so where can I?

OK I managed to get rid of IE, and when I try to install IE6 again, it STILL says I have a newer version installed, HOW CAN I UNINSTALL IE?! :( :( This is really starting to bug me :(

I am on windows XP and want to completely remove Internet Explorer 6, however this doesn't seem possible on WinXP...I'm at the point of throwing things
All I can do is remove IE from the components list, that really does a lot for me, it removes IE, I go to install IE6 again, and it says "newer version present" or something, and it says setup cannot continue...surely there's a WinXP whiz here that can help me out? I know next to nothing about computers :(

Anyone? Or maybe there's a fix to the problem of certain popup windows closing themselves?

I guess there is no hope? :o

Apparently not. I really have no idea how to fix it without reformatting, but I don't think you really want to be that drastic.

There is no way to completely remove Internet Explorer from Windows XP.

Ummm... Since you are on Windows XP, did you happen to perform a system rollback to before the problem started happening?

I installed SP1 but it had problems, so I uninstalled it [I archived the files], then the problems started happening...

So do a system restore to right before you installed Service Pack 1.

Thanks Wayne Luke, it worked :), unfortunately I had to go as far back as 7th October [last system point] but all's back to normal and I'm happy once again, thanks for all the help guys and girls!
