Hmm this sounds good I guess. With this many peoples hands in the software, does this mean it will now be open source free software? Maybe post it on sourceforge or something?
I am sure this group of people will do one hell of a job because I have delt with most of them personally, but I just wonder if it is a good idea to have so many hands in the same project. Plus it makes the rest of us feel kind of left out :(

Hey, do you know how many people are working on any commercial software product ? It doesn't means it should be free and I hope Vbulletin will NOT become free.
As to feel left out.... C'mon..... those guy will work on our beloved forum, you shouldn't feel left out ?! It's not like your best friend would do a party without inviting you... this is for working and developping !!

Left out? Not hardly, this is the best thing that has happened to vbulletin yet! It will get more good coders on the project and work out those bugs. It is going to be a great release! :)

Plus it makes the rest of us feel kind of left out :(You're quite mistaken. We were essentially hired by Jelsoft. Therefore it is not open source and you're not being "left out."

Well as said before.......if the success of this product will be left in anyones hands, I would rather it be the group that Jelsoft has selected here.
Now I will still be expecting my 50% cut but we can discuss that outside of the forums ;)

I can't wait to start working with the rest of the team, woohoo. I'm still trying to get a hang of CVS though -- even TortoiseCVS is giving me a few problems.
Thanks for the welcome. :)

Could you please drop us a word here when all is working and when you really start working on the code ?
We'd love to know this.
Thanks,

Since you all are working on the code now does that mean you can include all of your personal hacks into it? For example, I would love to see freddies "calendar" hack, Mikes "blist" and "save copy move" hacks, Chris' "search engine listing" hack, James's "dont use brackets unless your posting a hack" hack. :D
Anyway, you get the idea...... are you guys going to be able to go wild with your ideas? I think this would be real nice, as long as every feature has an on/off toggle in the control panel so that the software doesnt become complete "bloatware".

This is faboulous news, but also brings concern to me over the future of vBulletin. I have no doubts that the collaboration of these 5 will bring about a product that is much better and released sooner than what John could have done by himself.
Why not extend this reasoning to an open-source bb that could be collaborated on by 20 or 30 qualified developers? If one looks at the open source programs out there, (check out http://www.sourceforge.net) the quality of these open-source movements is mind-boggling. PHP Groupware (http://www.phpgroupware.org) is close to being a internet version of Outlook that offers most of the features of Outlook. Squirrel Mail (http://www.squirrelmail.org) looks like hotmail and would be a tremendous addition to any site. PHP Nuke (http://www.phpnuke.com) is a weblog like Slashdot that is being optimized by a team of developers and will soon be a solution useable by high traffic sites. None of these programs is perfect, but each is a viable solution that harnesses the power of the community and doesn't cost a dime.
How much longer until there is a bulletin board which is just as fast and has just as many features as VB or UBB, but doesn't cost a dime? If vBulletin were open source, it would have had private messages, avatars, and been optimized months ago. While I love vBulletin, I'm seriously considering building future sites with PHP BB (http://www.phpb.com), not because of cost, but because it does everything the current release of vBulletin does, and will probably only take 2 months to incorporate new features, not 5 or 6.
I do not mean for this to be contrued as a rant against vBulletin. I really like the software and am having a tough time moving away from it. I just hate to see all the talent which goes into making the great hacks we all use go to waste. John must reinvent the wheel so that vBulletin uses its own code and therefold can be sold. This system is inefficent and I feel that it can only go on for so long before an open source alternative becomes a viable alternative.

vBulletin is also a commercial venture meaning it needs to draw income. Open Source is not conducive to making a living.

I understand the difference Luke. I don't see vBulletin going open source. My question directed to the readers of this forum, whose opinions I value, was if they see an open-source clone of vB overtaking the original? Before today, vB was the result of 1 coder. If one were to install all the great hacks available, including the karma hack on your site, they would have something that was worked on by over 10.
BTW, I don't neccesarily agree that open-source != profits. Take a look at http://www.akopia.com. It's a better storefront solution than competitors costing thousands of dollars. Could Jelsoft not make more taking in 300 dollars a month for providing vBulletin dedicated optimized servers than the 70 dollars a year they currently get? Similar idea to Infopop, but without the rediculous prices. Give it away to those will small sites, provide valuable services to those who need them.

I guess that since I am a programmer by trade (C/C++, Visual Basic, SQL mainly Oracle and SQL Server), that I am kind of biased against Open Source since I can't see it paying my bills or sending my kids to college. The only Open Source software I have ever worked with is PHP so my experience is limited as well.

I am sure he was talking about phpbb ( http://www.phpbb.com ) It has a look similar to vbulletin and it is getting new features almost every day.

This is great, this release is going to rock! :D
BTW, I feel everyone's pain about CVS. I use it at work, and it took me awhile to get the hang of it. Although, the other day, I actually reverted to an old file (since I totally broke the one I commited) all by myself. I was totally psyched. :D
