Hey Guys,

If you're on a cpanel box, and have root access to your server, here's how to disable mbstring in php in order to get Polls/Search to work correctly -- in php 4.2.3 (see this thread (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56291) )

Login to your server via SSH/telnet, etc as root.

/scripts/easyapache

choose advanced mode

and make sure these modules are selected

* User bandwidth leech protection
* Bytes logging Module
* Frontpage Module
* Raise HARD_SERVER_LIMIT
* Rewrite Module
* SSL Module
* suEXEC Module

also select
PHP Modules -->

and uncheck whatever you want (PHP modules) i.e. mbstring

and then select EXIT, and have apache/php recompile (it takes about 5 minutes or so).

And then you're good to go.

My host advised me that others on our shared server want the mstring option on. Now what do I do? It stinks not having the time show of last post and the admin panel missing 1st 4 characters, however by providing 4 spaces I was able to work around the forum name, contact url and home page url by adding 4 spaces before it.

Help :(

The best advice, truely, is to find another host, unfortunately.

From what I hear that vB v3 is going to rely solely on having this disabled to get the board to work.

If you need help finding a host that has it disabled, contact me (trying not to sound to sale pitchy ;) ).

Thank you. I can not believe this problem was found. I think it should be a show stopper without a doubt. I may buy a dedicated server, will see. Very fustrated at this time, but life goes on beyond forums :)

Of course -- sometimes its better to have your own box, instead of relying on other ppl, as far as problems go.

nice although recompiling php if dynamically compiled would have the same effect :)

Will doing this restore the characters lost from the begining of the strings?

I just noticed after adding four blank characters to the beginning of a bunch of the admin settings that there was an additional problem.

The names of folders in my user's PM area is also affected by the mbstring bug, and I don't know how to correct it in this instance. Any clues?

Doing this will only ensure future polls/pms/whatever will not be affected. It does not fix existing problems.

Once this has been changed should all the timecodes start showing up again? Mine haven't.

You need to go through and fix all the settings yourself, unfortunately. It's very irritating.

4.2.3 = a nightmare.

I am on a dedicated server - for some stupid reason I upgraded to php 4.2.3 -- It broke a fully working site, my forums broke and half my site has died ....

If i compile without mbstring apache wont start...

Its been driving me nuts .. heh

I cant understand why the PHP developers havent brought out a fix.... as i am sure we arent the only ones having this issue

Same goes for MySQL, Our customers were getting errors after the MySQL upgrade. a problem with threads becoming corrupt... running repair.php did the trick. Nuke had issues too and required 18 find and replaces between the index, news, downloads and link files.
