In the near future I am going to be purchasing a bulletin board program for my gaming server/site. Originally I thought UBB was my only option, but now I have discovered vBulletin and like what I have seen so far. With the exception of the Control Panel.

UBB's control panel has the same awsome look and feel of the bulletin board itself. With vB the control panel is text only and has that early-version look to it. Don't get me wrong looks aren't everything, however, the interface in UBB just puts vB's to shame. Its the little things like seeing the colors next to the value.

So far I love vB compaired to UBB. The idea of running the SQL database on another machine other then the webserver is very nice. If there is any reason I go with UBB over it though, it would be the control panel.

So my question is. I've seen the screenshots of the new control panel and it looks better. Will you include more of the features UBB has to offer? Possibly make the styles easier to edit for us non HTML inclined people? Give me C or C++ and I can turn anything out, but I'm not a visualarts inclined person.

Then. If I purchase an owned liscense for vB v1.0, will v2.0 be available for me to download from the "Member's Area"?

Yes, your access to the member's area is good for one year during which time you will have access to any and all software updates. Extra years are available at a nominal fee.

As far as the Control Panel, I happen to agree about the looks. But what is more important to me is the functionality of the Control Panel. The power that vB's Control Panel gives you blows UBB's out of the water, despite not looking as good. Not to sound mean, but anyone who would choose UBB over vB because of the way the Control Panel looks obviously doesn't understand the significant differences that vBulletin offers.

For v2.0, the CP will be more "user friendly" - including Template Previews. The colors are something that is relatively easy to do, and I'm sure it has been discussed.

I'm not saying the current vB Control Panel is as attractive as UBB's, but what it offers is far greater in terms of having total control over your bulletin board.

I agree, I would never choose something over another that is asthetically pleasing to me, maybe if the other was.

That was my only reservation about going with vBulletin. I've seen at least a dozen forums that I visit on occasion recently switch from UBB to vB, that is proof enough for me.

This amaze me. The last thing I would consider when choosing a bb script, is the CP look.
I mean do you spend all your time in the CP ? What's important is what your user see, not what you see.

VB CP panel is 100% functional, and fast to download. It really let you do what you want.

If there is any reason I go with UBB over it though, it would be the control panel.

You'll gain a finger, but loose an arm.

Very true. However, if a company takes the time to make the entire program look top notch as opposed to only the user interface it shows something. Like I explicitly stated previously; at this point I plan on getting vB. If you read carefully what I said was:

"Originally I thought UBB was my only option, but now I have discovered vBulletin and like what I have seen so far. With the exception of the Control Panel."

...

"If there is any reason I go with UBB over it though, it would be the control panel. "

To me both program appear to offer the same functionality, if they offer the same features then I go to the asthetic values.

The interface of the UBB control panel, specifically the style section, is quite a bit more intuitive then what I have seen from vB Lite.

However, you're comparing vB lite to UBB full. Hardly fair, so head over to http://www.vbulletin.com/admindemo.html and you'll see :)

Also, the 2.0 CP is quite nice compared to UBB, IMHO.

well, you shouldn't forget that there are still some unconfirmd and unannounced fuctions that might be in the CP.
