creating style

I have searched the forums but cannot find a definitive answer on how to create a new style.

I want to create new layouts and colours for my board, i know i can changed colours in CP but i want to create a new style file which i can upload along with new images.

I have looked at style files but cannot make head or tail of the way they are structured.

Is there a primer on how to create a new style file which creates a new layout, if i can get a basic idea of what the key elements are it would make life easy.
