View Full Version : vB Maintenance Requirements?

I recently switched over from UBB to vB. Needless to say, it has been a MAJOR improvement!

I have a medium sized board...2,600 members, 47,000 posts and 10,800 threads.

In UBB I had to constantly update search indexes, threads, etc to keep things working smoothly. This was especially true when I would move threads from one forum to another. If I did nothing the search function would produce erroneous results.

Does vB need regular maintenance? If so, what? I see the Maintenance/Update Counters in the admin but, I really don't know if I need to use it. Everything seems to be humming along just fine.

The only maintenance I do (unlike my old UBB where I was constantly maintaining it) is update threads when I change someone's username for them. Otherwise, I haven't needed to touch it since August for anything else and I've got a pretty large board (about 4 times as large as yours)!!

You're going to love it!

The only maintanaince required for me is to regularly backup your data (just in case), and that is it! :)

If you do a large mass delete or mass move, it is generally wise to update your counters - but it will tell you that in the CP after you've made your changes.

Aside from that, vBulletin is like a good watch - it takes a beating, and keeps on ticking.

But, as werehere said, regular backups of your data are imperitive - but that's not any fault of vB, it's a standard operating procedure when dealing with any database.

I think there is going to be a backup utility integrated into the the CP for version 2.

If you search in the MySQL forum, someone posted a shell script that will backup your database and email you the files. We do that on a daily basis at SitePoint and FTP the files from one server to the other.
