Height and width tags in templates are not hardcoded...By the very fact that they're in the templates they are available for easy change. Pretty sure that won't be changed.

In the "search" page, the word is spelt "separate" and not "seperate".

One of my users has just noticed.

Could it be fixed for v2.2.2 please? :)

Under the FAQ template, [What are the buddy and ignore lists?], the "Buddy" image has been set to 58X18 when it is actually 55X17, probably better not to have any size associated with it :)

Here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/misc.php?s=&action=faq&page=1#buddy

Well I am on a roll here :)
Under the admin panel go to :
styles --> download/upload --> Upload existing style set: (from your computer)
You will notice that it says "Overwrite style existing style".
Shouldn't it just be "Overwrite existing style"?

This is also under:
styles --> download/upload --> Import existing style set: (from local file)

Go to the following URL in your admin panel:
Templates --> Modify

"Templates with this color names are using the original templates that are included with by default with vBulletin and may only be added in order to create a custom template."

It has an extra WITH, like so!

"Templates with this color names are using the original templates that are included with by default with vBulletin and may only be added in order to create a custom template."

Remove the WITH and your in business :)

With some browsers, text following the end tag for vBcode Code will render in different font face than normal text. I believe the problem is this mark up:

</pre><font face="verdana, arial, helvetica" size="2" ></blockquote>

which is used at the end of the CODE section. I think the font tag needs to follow the blockquote. I also think the same problem affects the vBcode Quote and PHP tags.

Hi John,

I am not sure if this is the right place, but if it isn't, feel free to move the post.

..

Ok

When I follow:

search.php?s=&action=finduser&userid=(any)

I get a 'very' cool page where I can see all the posts from the given user(id).

It just came to my attention that even though some posts are from polls, it does mention "Thread: " ..

Maybe I am incorrect, but shouldn't that be "Poll: " ?

Additional: Very cool, to have that preview thingy there!!

Abilities was previously reported as mispelled. Utilise is the proper British spelling. Internet is not a proper noun, depending on the context, so it is not required to be capitalized.

The rest will be fixed.

Actually "Internet" is legally recognised as a name, I ran into striffe with that word whilst registering a trademark.

tubedogg
Mon 7th Jan '02, 6:35pm
It may very well be a trademark but it does not mean that in every context it is a proper noun.

Take for instance General Motors. In the instance of the company it is a trademark. However neither word by itself, and in some contexts even together, are necessarily proper nouns or the trademarked name. I could say "I received a lot of general motors from him", in this case general meaning something along the lines of universal.

The same thing with internet cafe. Unless the cafe is named "The Internet Cafe" the word internet is generic and not trademarked in that context.

I would also be interested to know who exactly trademarked internet. Internet.com is a specific context so I would be surprised if that's what you ran into problems with.

Not to knock Brits, or anything, but the the american spellings of engish words are more common, and are known world-wide, it's almost a universal language. I think that yall should use the american spellings. In fact, I hardly ever see the british spellings on things anymore. I use to see them on advertisements occasionly, but it has been ages since I have seen one.

Just a thought. If you refuse to change the spellings, would yall be able to provide a list of templates with american spellings? Not that I have noticed any other words that are incorrect, but there might be some.

tubedogg
Mon 7th Jan '02, 10:19pm
Depends who's writing it. ;) Jelsoft is a British company so naturally when the default templates were created the British spellings were used. As more people start working on it, specifically Americans, you might find instances where there is a word that has two different spellings and the American spelling is used.

At any rate that's why the templates are there. :)

Internet is the proper name for a global compilation of interconnected computer networks. There is only one and can only be one Internet. It properly names a global entity.

However it can also be used in an improper noun fashion to describe the smaller networks that make up the single global network.

An example (http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=Internet) of both forms can be found at dictionary.com.

So in essence you are both correct in your assertions.

Correct, but you're talking about a company name there. Let's say the word "motor" is trademarked for the purpose of what a motor actually is, your sentence now becomes "I received a lot of general Motors from him".

In regards to the Internet there's two issues. Firstly the word Internet is the actual name for this "global computer network", so if used in regards to this international network (ie the Internet) then for correct English it requires capitalisation (though wluke has correctly highlighted this). Secondly the word Internet has been trademarked, so if used in regards to whatever the heck some bastard managed to register it for then it requires capitalisation in that context.

I'm not entirely sure who the bastard is that registered the name, though I'm sure it could be searched for. I ran into problems simply because the "description" of my trademark contained the word "Internet" (something along the lines of "blah blah blah on the Internet blah blah blah") - even though the context of my use of Internet was not in the context of what it has apparently been legally protected for, a trademark description cannot contain the use of another trademark - if that makes any sense. Hence the only reason I found out Internet was a trademark was because my application was put into dispute over the use of the word, which they then advised the internationally accepted alternative is (in exact words) "global computer network".

Okay, back on topic, I think I may have found a bug.

I've been experimenting with ways to make creating new styles easier, and to do this, I've added 3 custom replacement variables, {color1}, {color2}, and {color3}, to use throughout a standard set of templates. Each of these is replaced by some variation of #xxxxxx.

To take it one step further, I've tried to use these replacement variables within other replacement variables. For instance, I would have { categorybackgroundcolor } replaced by {color1}, and so on. Most of the time, this works the way you would expect it. But it NEVER works in the <body> tag. Which, of course, is important.

Furthermore, in my experimentation, I've noticed that when I use { linkcolor } in the <body> tag, it always gets replaced with #000020, regardless of the *real* value for { linkcolor }. Strangely enough, "#000020" isn't used in any replacement variable.

Thoughts?

Thank you for registering, George. Your account has been submitted for moderation by an admisitrator and will be activated presently. You will be notified by email when this happens. To return to the forums, click here.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but is "and will be activated presently" proper English? The activated presently part seems to be incorrect.

I mean it’s not going to be activated until an Admin or Moderator does it. :)

From dictionary.com

pres·ent·ly (prznt-l)
adv.
In a short time; soon: She will arrive presently.
Usage Problem. At this time or period; now: He is presently staying with us.
Archaic. At once; immediately.
Usage Note: An original meaning of presently was “at the present time; currently.” That sense is said to have disappeared from the literary language in the 17th century, but it has survived in popular usage and is widely found nowadays in literate speech and writing. Still, there is a lingering prejudice against this use. The sentence General Walters is... presently the United States Ambassador to the United Nations was acceptable to only 50 percent of the Usage Panel in the late 1980s.

According to this, it could be considered correct, but it's not a common word and most people would not know this definition. I would suggest changing it to

and will be activated shortly.

Previously, I only checked the first page of the FAQ.

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/misc.php?s=&action=faq&page=2#pm

You will need to periodically delete old messages, as the administrator has probably set a limit to the number of private messages you can have in your folders. If you excede the number of messages specified by the administrator, you will not be able to send or receive new messages until you delete some old messages.

Should be changed to: exceed

The unread messages section shows all messages that you have sent with a read-receipt request, that have not yet been read by their recipient. The time of the last activity of the message recipient is also shown. Messages in this section can be cancelled if you decide that their contents are no longer relevant, or for any other reason. Cancelled messages can also be restored to active status if the adminstrator has enabled this feature.

Should be changed to: administrator

When you recieve a message with a read-receipt request, you may have the option to read the message while denying the read-receipt request. To do this, simply click the 'deny receipt' link rather than the title of the message, if it appears.

Should be changed to: receive

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/misc.php?s=&action=faq&page=3#HTML

After you have made your modifications, a note may appear, which notifies other users that you have edited your post. Administrators and moderators may also edit your messagesm but this note may not appear when they do so.

Should be changed to: messages

Moderators oversee specific forums. They generally have the ability to edit and delete posts, move threads, and perform other manipulations. Becoming a moderator for a specific forum is usually rewarded to users who are particularly helpful and knowledgable in the subject of the forum they are moderating.

Should be changed to: knowledgeable

That's all folks!
