I've seen a lot of bad things about the new Pentium 4 when it comes to servers. So from a server perspective, I'd like to see the options of CPU's.

I take it celerons are out the window; I wouldn't even use one of those on my home computer.

A regular Pentium 3 seems to be favored over a regular Pentium 4. Why is this? Why would intel take a step down?

What about Xeon and Itanium processors? Too much for a webserver?

Justs how do you analyze a processor for its efficiency? I know the frequency and bus speeds have only a fraction to do with it (A 800 MHz Xeon is more powerful than a 1.2 GHz Celeron).

You pretty much sem to have the bases covered wrt to processor choice.

Depends on a lot of factors - P3's are reliable workhorses when it comes to webserverving and getting every last ounce of performance. P4 didn't introduce any significant performance gain and is still relatively new technology.

Xeons are really worth the money in dual processor set ups - I couldn't justify the extra expense on a single user set up.
