Problem with Adding background images to the categories How to

I'm reading and following along with the "[HowTo] Design and Tweak your Frontpage" like a good little newbie and I ran into a snag.
It says there should be two gifs: cat_bg_01.gif and cat_bg_02.gif that are to be uploaded to the inages folder. I can't find either of these images. Do they come with vB? If so where are they located? I'd like to follow this thru to see the end result. If not, is there a tut similar to this one that focuses on adding images?
Is there a tut on how to replace the "v" next to the discussion lists?
Is there a way to get away from using solid colors on the forums? I'd like to apply a blend of 2 or more colors in a linear style, example white blending with black and/or brown. Is this possible?
Any response is appreciated.

You have to create them yourself

First of all, why didn't you ask in the appropiate thread? The support I can give, goes through that thread.
Having said that, if you read the thread again:

(Please note that I did not include the cat_bg_0*.gif images, and that the below screenshot is ugly, I just used a random image to highlight the effect - the best way is to make them yourself!)
