So,
When a guest browses my forum, they are allowed to only 'browse' the forum, in order to participate in discussions or use any of the features, then registration is required. Said that,
when a guest browses my forum, the frontpage shows two type of images "onlock.gif" and "offlock.gif". In what conditions are they shown? Because they look the same (maybe because over time the icons changes with the design).

Maybe the question was confusing - at least to me.

When does vBulletin display the onlock.gif and offlock.gif images on the frontpage? And what do they represent?

If 'Show Locked Forums' is set to 'Yes, and...

...the forum is open to posts, it will diplay 'onlock.gif'

...the forum is closed to posts it will display 'offlock.gif'.

Nonsense!

If the forum is locked or you don't have permission to post and:

There's a new post: onlock.gif
There are no new posts: offlock.gif
