Here is a list of some of the biggest vBulletin powered boards on the web so we can all learn from their success. If people know of any not listed here (and I am sure there are lots) just post a reply and I will update the list: (last updated @ 30 June 2009 by Kerry-Anne)

I'd rather change it to something like 250,000 members or more instead of 1 million posts and greater, since a lot of those posts will be spam spam spam, all the way. The most popular boards should be numbered from the most members, since those are the ones who can attract people to join, and usually stay to post [and read-up ]
Just my 2 cents hehe :):)

Problem with members is it is easy to fake and some people can just import all their members from other bits of the site, e.g. www.flashkit.com
It would be better to do it on active users but without a method for determining an average amount of online users this is not really possible.

yes, that is true... maybe for active users, we could do # of posts / # of members ?

Number of registered users isn't a good indication of how big a forum is IMHO. The ratio of registered users and users online (within, of course, a respectable cookie timeout) would mean a lot to me if I was comparing forum size.

Alot of boards out there have huge numbers of members but about 5 % of the members actually post.
I have seen many 5000 plus member boards with 8 to 10 people on line lol
I think its about time to purge the dead members on some of these boards and get back to reality.
Must be an ego thing I guess
:)

The problem we have is that it seems every time we (used to) purge not a couple weeks later we'll get people who say "What happened to my account?"
That and people who are banned like to come back and be annoying. Still, I've long considered wiping people out who haven't posted in 6 months. :)

You know, right, that people will be telling their boardmembers to check out this thread and see if they have an interest in any of these huge communities, and if so, to post there and have links back to his/her own board, eventually leading to even more spam on those huge places. right?
Or did I give 500 people a 'good idea' just now?

Yup, porn is what the internet is all about.
I wonder how big the mySQL databases are? Can they take something so big? I wonder how many hard drives they span. Can a mySQL file be cut up or would it have to be put together using RAID?

That's because he made the postbit and header buttons you see. As well as the postbit inspiration. Corey knows of this. I made sure it was ok with him first before anything was worked on. All graphics and work are original.

There doesn't seem to be any real pattern to any of these either. Some of them look good and some of them look horrible in my opinion. One of them was even black which people tend to say is a no-no in the forum world.
Their subject matter varies a lot too. Some are more jack-of-all-trades and others are more specific.
I guess the only thing that might be true of all of them is that they have been around a long time. But I don't know that for sure. That's just assumed.
Interesting list though. I guess it might just be a matter of getting the right people together and from there having it snow ball and spread by word of mouth.
Makes you wonder if these people are either very successful communicators or have no real life. :D

I like to use "View today's threads" to see how busy a forum is, since the number of posts can be misleading based on how long the forum was running. But the problem is, many of us disable this feature to guests, to save some server load.
From the looks of it, FanHome.com and RapMusic.com have the most posts at ~4 million each!
Of course, ther are some private forums with well over a million posts, but, they're private :)

Wow...amazing. I wonder how often errors get generated due to corruptions in the database with such forums.

Does it increase server load by a disproportionate amount or something? i.e. What's the difference between hitting"View New Since..." after 1 day, and just hitting "View Today's Threads". Wouldn't they be about the same?
Just wondering... So _that's_ why I have to manually edit the URL on some boards to use 'getdaily'... ;)

No, not a disproportionate load, I don't think. But a load none the less. I restrict guests to simply reading threads, and nothing else. This allows them to see what the forum is about, and saves the resources for registered members.

wow - we always wondered how we measured up to other vb boards ... its good to see these other large vb sites!
I think we made the switch to VB from UBB about 2 years ago - UBB was killing our server :( ... and thats when we had maybe 15,000 members. I remember pleading with TED from UBB for help (server issues) on the newer versions of UBB, but at the time, they only seemed to care about their commercial version and seemed to forget about the little guys that helped get them where they were. They are a great example of the Fat Cat Syndrome. You know, where the cat who chases all the mice, gets lazy - and here comes along VB to take their market share. :)
We still have one forum that has around 600,000 post, we had a problem when trying to prune old post one night, and it was just easier to close it down and open a new one. If there is one thing I wish could be (maybe there is) a hack to delete post in the blink of an eye.
We have to give alot of credit to Liz - who has helped create some unique backend hacks that make our hobby of running that board alot easier. Without her help, we wouldn't of made it this far.
Some people ask me all the time, how did we grow so fast? We never ever spent a dime on outside marketing. When we started, we used to give away free mousepads and t-shirts when members got to 500 post. I think we must of given away at 500 shirts that 1st year alone- ( need a good deal on tee's goto: http://www.ndesigns.net/screen ) I suggest if you want your board to grow, be involved with the members. Listen to them! Make sure you pick great mods that won't run off your members.
So for those that haven't purchased a VB yet, I suggest you go now and get your copy: www.InfoPOOP.com lol!!!

Heh, something more forums should do.
There's no point in saying "we have 10K registered users!" when there are only 100 active users and 9900 Never-Come-Backs.
It's an old trick some BBS Sysops used to do to out-do other boards... :)
It's sorta like saying "We have 50,000 posts!!" when they're mostly one-liners like "Yeah." ";);)!!!", "I agree", and "wut'up".
Actually, it'd be great to have a floating user count option, i.e. Total Registered Users *and* a definable "Active Users" count, where you could set it to X months back...

Damn. I found the suggestions corner, but you need to be a vB member/customer to post in that forum. Could a member or maybe a vB moderator suggest on my behalf a Supermoderator CP, which would contain the standard mod cp, along with some of the features from the admin cp - like the ability to update member profiles (this would be useful so that smods could a) change member names if so desired and b) unabn members upon moderator requests).
Maybe another alternative to the same goal would be to break apart the Admin Control Panal, like the mod cp can be. Like, there is the option to ban people on the mod cp, but that option is set as smod only where I assist, same with the mass move and mass prune. This way, any other details that the administrator feels his staff is trustworthy with can be dealt with as well (like creating forums - but not the deletion of, for example).
Thankyou to whomever forwards my suggestions.

While i do know that you have had 5+ million posts they are being prunned and thus the database does not hold that many. It is quite easy to fake this type of thing by just adding a high entry into the thread or post table and starting from there (i know this has not been done here) but have made the decision to only include forums where the 1 million + posts are still in the database. Part of the idea of this list is to show vbulletin working under the stress of a large database but pruning does not show this.

ALTER TABLE tbl_name AUTO_INCREMENT = XYZ
will re-set it to XYZ.
I think you can also change it when you insert a new row and specify a value for the auto_increment.
You could also insert many rows to the post table in a loop to artificially inflate the count.

Maybe a vBulletin staff should check out their VIP section? Might be sharing warez, as one of the forum descriptions states:

Are you looking for apps, games, mp3z...?
By the way, looks like they don't have a vBulletin copyright showing anywhere; maybe that should get looked into to, to see if they've paid for that to be removed.

You are not simply "giving your imput". You are speaking on their behalf and defending their site in an unappropriate manner. It is not your business whether or not they have paid for the copyright to be removed or whether their site has warez or not... and unless you're an admin there, I don't see how it concerns you. If my site was being accused of hosting warez content and illegally removing the copyright, I sincerely hope members wouldn't come here and start speaking on my company's behalf. All that does is cause confusion, especially when you don't have the company's permission to be speaking on their behalf. Furthermore, even if you are an admin, clearing your case publically probably won't help much, so I suggest you e-mail jelsolt directly.
Now i'm done posting in this thread and hopefully a mod will lock it eventually as it's gotten way off track (plus I think we've gotten about 99% of the 1,000,000+ boards out there already).

First off, it's none of your bussiness to care to start with, much less tell me what I should be doing
And secondly there is no case to clear up lol, they are a legal forum with a valid license (which is already more than I know about you) ;)

I will not list forums where you have to register to view; I don't have time.
Hardforum has been listed for a few months; it really dosen't need two mentions despite its size.
Please don't post sites with < 1 million posts, it just wastes my time having to check them.

I think Usenet forums are acceptable if the purpose here is, as I understand, to demonstrate how scalable vB is with high post counts.
If we're talking about original communities specifically, it'd be different, but usually when the question of 1 mill+ vBs comes around it's to see if vB can handle the load. Besides, I like seeing how well integrated Usenet groups can be. ;)

I hope that having a million posts on line isn't that big of a deal for vBulletin. Sometime in the next ten days I hope to push the "Go" button and convert over a UBB 6.x system to vBulletin. We have over 670K posts on-line now, and I'd hate to think that in another year or so we would be outgrowing vBulletin.

== Bill The number of posts dosen't make a huge amount of difference to performance in fact; the number of online users is what affects how hard vbulletin hits your server. Some of the people listed in this thread regularly have 800 people online, and I have seen some with up to 1,200 online.

Due to server load limits we can only offer 2,000 connections to the forums at any given moment.
http://www.tournament.com/forums/ spun off from one of the INA forums a few years ago and we just hit the mil mark a month or two ago, but I'd hardly call that "huge" (or even all that large) by any standards, it just means we haven't pruned in a while :) I think of "large" in terms of how much email I'd get if the site went down  (or, how many users are online all the time).

We are closing in on the 1 million mark with 600k now. I was about 200k closer but I prune out our classifieds often. Database is coming up on 3GB!
I found something pretty cool last week for those of you who have these big sites and lots of members like me. I just bought one for my site www.rcuniverse.com (http://www.rcuniverse.com). It is one of those toolbars like yahoo, google, nasdaq or ebay have available. I set it up so my members can go direct to any of my forum and search from the toolbar that installs right onto IE. While the very small sites with few members don't need this it is awesome for the medium to larger sites members.
It was a no brainer for me with 27,000 members. It was $99 and took maybe 10 minutes to build online right through the companies website. http://www.customtoolbar.com
Now I'm going to try and work with the developer to integrate some direct tie ins to VB which will be posted over at vb.org whenever I can get them done. Things like PM notice on the bar, integrated chat, streaming text ticker and some other good stuff.

Nuno,
I don't think it is like this one. If you find it can you let me know though?
I looked hi and low for an IE toolbar. Only one besides this I found that worked was around $2500 and the developer never called me back! I tried a few others that were extremely hard to configure (you had to edit config text files) and just didn't work. This bar was easy to install via the web and is all web based to create it. The beauty of it is that us vbulletin guys can now run with the big boys with this cool custom toolbar without spending a few grand.
Better yet is the integrated tie ins to vbulletin which I will try to help code. If you want to download my toolbar just for a demo to see what it is click link below. You should be running IE 5.0 or higher. AOL browser may have issues as they don't want anybody taking their toolbar space!
http://www.customtoolbar.com/ctb/installtool.asp?us=119&id=75&ver=15
I got pretty excited by this considering the price is within the reach of us common folk so checked to see if VB integration was possible. Answer was yes. Things like a preference page so you can go to a web page and pick from all the available forums and only those will come up in the toolbar and in the structure as they appear on your own forum! While you can do this manually on the bar right now my hack idea is to automate it for my forum. Even without the automation the toolbar itself is still a member pleaser and saves some bandwidth as it cuts down some navigation steps.

We are the largest Subaru enthusiasts site in the world. We've been around since June 1999 and are now over 26K users (we dump all unconfirmed accounts after 10 days)
I don't post here that much, but we are just about to pass 3.4 million posts this month. With an average 150K posts per month.
