You guys keeping these all online? I'm at just shy of 2.5 million and having heaps of search headaches... :( I've heard Off-Topic prunes very often, which seems to fit since the whole site there really wouldn't use old posts -- but mine all the old posts are very often searched for and read...

No problems here at over 3m. I'm guessing your MySQL isn't optimized for your site. You might want to ask Eva to help you out on that.
Also for your search. You might want to consider installing the MySQL hack, or as we have done, offload the work to Google :D

My site is now around 2.6M or so posts, all relevant and online.. For "normal" board stuff (ie. reading and posting) performance is very good. If I use the built-in VB search or even the VB.org FULLTEXT search, performance goes right in the crapper. MySQL table locks will damned near take the box down, and the site? Well, the appropriate response would be "what site? I don't see any website!" ... :(
The problem starts with MySQL, but ends with vBulletin. Nothing can be done to properly fix this issue as long as vBulletin is coded against a database engine that only supports table-level locking. I've resorted to creating secondary copies of the post and thread tables, copied and reindexed once every morning when there's only 150-200 active users online. It sucks, because that breaks things like View New Posts and looking at a users' recent posts.

The one I provided or the actual hack?
MySQL's MySIAM is table locking, while InnoDB is row level locking, but is typically slower.

MySQL's Innodb table type does support row-level locking, just not fulltext searching.
Most of us big sites have been using Innodb tables for years now..

I've heard some of the same comments, but I'm willing to give InnoDB a try if it'll help.
Who here has a 2+M post site running InnoDB, and what style of search are you using? I know many won't have good statistics of search usage, which really makes all the difference in performance on my site. I've seen up to 175 concurrent unique hosts performing searches, which really tears up ISAM. It'll get bad enough to trigger my watchdog cron job to punt MySQL and restart it.

I've just, literally an hour ago, converted a few of my tables back to InnoDB, including my 14 million row post table. I'm not using full-text search anyway so I've just dropped the fulltext indices and did it. I do allow members to search each other's posts, and that was causing major table locking and runaway mysql processes... I'll let you know how it goes... I tried it yesterday, but had to redo it because I wanted to tweak the InnoDB log file sizes... it's a pain to tweak the InnoDB config... :)

Have we talked about server hardware before in this thread? I didn't see any discussion about it. What server hardware are you all running? What do you think about AMD Opteron vs. Intel Xeon for processing?
We own three servers with the following stats:
1U ServerMicro Dual Xeon 2.8ghz 800FSB, 2GB RAM, 2x36gb 15krpm SCSI in RAID1.
We're thinking about buying a kick a database server, but don't quite know what we should get. We've heard some good things about Opterons, but Xeons have always been stable and generally great.
Suggestions? Opinions?

It might best best to post these sort of things in the Server Configuration http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14 forum. You are likely to get more responses.

Right.
Because this thread is more involved with discussing MySQL (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=18), PHP (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=12), and how they are configured (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14), right? ;)
I'm not even too curious about my question, so if no one choses to respond here it does not bother me.
I operate a very large "1 million posts and greater" community, FYI.

Hi, I run a vB board that has 850,000+ posts and 28,259 registered users.
Peak users online is low 400s with mid 350s as fairly common.
My server is a 3.06ghz dual Xeon with 1GB ram and an IDE hard drive.
I get a lot of these general error messages:
Database error in vBulletin :
Link-ID == false, connect failed
mysql error:
mysql error number: 0
About once or twice a day, mySQL will get really slow for about 5 minutes or so.
My guess is that my hard drive is having trouble keeping up.
I can get a new server with 2x36GB SCSI drives (Seagate 10,000RPM) and a RAID card, but it will cost me about 50% more per month.
Anyway, my question is: Do you think the new drives will help performance significantly and, if so, do you recommend a RAID 0 configuration?
Thanks!

I've had this problem. You'll find that upgrading your RAM to 2 Gig will completely resolve the problem. Check you cache, and you'll find that the server is hitting the drive cache so hard that it can't keep up with the traffic. But if you boost you RAM it'll reduce to remove the cache hits.
I'm running a AMD3500+ with 2 Gig of RAM with an average of 600 users online at peak.

as an update on this thread, i have now 176 vBulletin forums over the million post mark (http://www.big-boards.com/index.php?type=vBulletin&page=all) in database @big-boards.com
Largest is still Literotica, although the General Mayhem forums are coming in quickly. The post count taken into account is the one shown on the boards home page, therefore some boards like SA or off-topic (not even listed) may not be in the right place in terms of actual "activity".
Cheers,

Hey guys -
I searched this thread for "backup" and it didn't come up with anything. But, I was curious if you guys could point me in the right direction. I have my vB database backed up every morning at 5am EST. The site flies the entire day and night... but as soon as that time hits, the site turns dead. The backup brings the site to a crawl.
This is a 1GB database and I just need to know how I can back this up without making my site dead! Please let me know...
Sincerely,

Unfortunately there is no way to do this without affecting the db and server. In order to make a backup, each table has to be locked during that part of the backup.

I'd rather change it to something like 250,000 members or more instead of 1 million posts and greater, since a lot of those posts will be spam spam spam, all the way. The most popular boards should be numbered from the most members, since those are the ones who can attract people to join, and usually stay to post [and read-up ]
Just my 2 cents hehe :):)
wise words. :)

We've been growing consistantly ever since we moved from webX about 2 years ago. Soooo many good features. We want to upgrade to 3.5.1 ASAP, but we've made a lot of mods to the 3.0.0 RC2 code we started off with.
I had to change the search code recently ... we have 275, 000 posts that have the keyword "bike" ... obviously this caused a memory limit exception. I also am researching, and maybe coding, an archive feature. I've been given the job of finding a way to archive posts older than 1 year to HTML ... the database is getting so huge. Additionally, the archive needs to be searchable .... uhg

Constantly tweaking to keep the place running smoothly. Quite a challenge!
I doubt if anyone recognizes Steve's name, unless they are into collecting CDs or music, or they are an audiophile. Steve was the mastering engineer behind the DCC label, which remastered and re-released popular albums on gold CDs. DCC's gone, but he does work for a handful of other boutique labels now. He started mastering while at MCA--if you own something like the Buddy Holly or Bill Haley & The Comet's From The Original Master Tapes, that's his work too.
No spam on our forum, BTW: we've got an excellent team of moderators that usually jump on it within minutes, and have the spam removed and the spammer banned before most members can see it.

The thread is not outdated, because the new sites are added at the end. Over time we will update the first post again.
If you find a thread useless, don't post to it. We do not find it useless and are very glad that people take the time to report sites with millions of posts to us.

It all depends on the subject and how to enforce it to keep it going, I hope when my forum comes up, it blooms to that... well maybe not THAT HUGE but large enough to keep it awesome and running :)

About 1/4 of those posts we brought with us when we outgrew our original hosting on EZBored ;) almost a year ago. It's great to have a place where we have room to grow.

I will try and make time to code a script to check the server type of each of these sites. I think it would be good information to see how many are Apache, Microsoft, etc.
