View Full Version : a COMPLETELY private forum...

right now, when using access masks, and the custom permission settings for forums, to make a forum private, mods can STILL see and access the private forum.. The current fix for that is for me to go into each individual mods' account and edit their forum access to deny them access to that forum..
this is a pain for me.....
I currentlyhave over 50 mods, and the number grows monthly - and I have special private 'support groups' that require complete privacy each month, and so it requires a lot of work on my part to not only give the group members their access to their private forum, but also to go and block each mod from that forum. this is certainly something that would be nice to have in future versions - some sort of override button that makes a forum COMPLETELY private, and only allows access to people I have specifically given access to..

FWIW in vB3 you will be able to assign a separte password for private forums.

There is a hack at vb.org that lets you password protect forums.

Any chance that the way mods access masks work can be changed as well though?

I had exaclty the same problem and with over 80 mods on my board creating a new private forum was starting to be a nightmare. In the end I found a work around, seems mods access masks default as yes but super mods get set to default, so I just changed my mods into super mods and changed the super mods powers to be the same as moderators and no longer have the problem

I have private forums not accessible (and hidden) to mods.
By default, all forums & categories (with masks on...) are viewable only to groups 6 and 5.

It should be enough you to set that forum/category as private: this way, new forumpermission rows will be generated including all groups less 5 and 6 ....
Anyway you can edit each group forumpermission and set (custom section) all the flags to off.

So, the unique users would be able to see and access to such a forum would be Admins, Supermods and ALL AND ONLY THE USERS (including mods) you would have enabled by the single access mask.

After months and months fighting against the unpredictable security/authorization scheme of VBulletin, I found that works!!

It seems to me that vBulletin wasn't designed to be a truly privacy-enabled board, but rather based on an open model. Does the fact that you've integrated forum-specific passwords in v3 hint at a shift towards true privacy? If so, I do hope you look long and hard at what these three have requested, because a password-prompt isn't equal to true privacy, that is, not being able to see the forums marked as private. I know, the common user won't be able to see them, but this thread suggests that the way moderators are set up is rather cumbersome. There's no one true answer to this problem, but the current solution is lacking and if a password-block is the only real change with regards to this, then v3 will be lacking too.

They are completely redoing the permissions system, no big details yet.

Please. *pokes and prods - goes to beta.jelsoft.com, can't get in, cries* See I even asked nicely. Now a nice quiet e-mail with the login will do. :D  *crosses fingers behind back* And I promise not to let anyone else in, or post screenshots, or leak features. *uncrosses fingers* But I will drool, and ask for access to the CVS, etc. [/joke]

Well, I wasn't poking to get more (teaser-)insights into what'll make it into v3, but rather point the finger at a real problem and perhaps get it included into a future release. Teasers are over-rated anyhow. :)
