Okay, what kind of System do you recommend for a server for housing a vBulletin forum on Linux?
1. Small (10 simutaneous users_
2. Medium (100)
3. Large (250)

I said system specs, not OS.
Y'know, like

I got a 700mhz with something like 500MB RAM on a T3. size of HD should be at least 20gig.

The more ram the better, processor speed wont really make a difference.
If your going to have 100 concurrent users, you can probly get away with a PII 700 w/ 512meg ram, and ~9.1gig hd (depends what else is on the server, and how many post's you have, how often you will back up etc.)
If your going to have 250 concurrent users, i would go for a dual processor computer, with a gig of ram. Depending on the config and use of the server, that may hold upwards of 400 concurrent users.
If you max out at 30 concurrent users, go with a shared acct. I top out at 80 concurrent users, and have a $65/ month shared account with ventures online.

Wonder if there is a system out there that could handle 250,000 concurrent users.
Anyone know???
I'm just planning for the future. If someone could speck one out for me it would be appreciated:D :D :D
Thanks in advance

Don't know but you would probably have fun testing it on the IBM 690 7040-681T as outlined on the above link...
Let us know what you find out.

Yeah, well, you would need a couple million dollars and in order to have the bandwidth for so many users, you'd need an OC-192 connection (about 10 gbps)

Anyways, my server is a PIII with 512MB RAM and I believe 25GB, not sure...

RH 7.2 with 2.4.x latest kernel
dual p3 1.13 ghz tualatin 512k L2 cache
1.5 to 2GB of memory
2 x 36GB scsi 10,000 rpm hdds
would be a nice start for 150 - 350 users (predominantly being members not guests) or around 200 - 400 max_connections if it's only vB is the only script accessing the mysql database

I just built this puppy to take the place of 3 of my old server's
Dual Intel P3 1Ghz
4gb of RAM
Microsoft Windows 2000 DataCenter
10 36GB Ultra 160 10k rpm Hard drives
10 73GB Ultra 160 10k rpm Hard drives
LS120
HP DVD 100i
Dual ATM OC-12 Network Cards
for a total of 1.9 terabytes
so I think my recommendations are for more advanced, but I do have vb hosted on a
Celeron 533
512mb ram
120gb hard drives space
Windows 2000 / IIS

Wow Dave, is this for some sort of video editing machine? One of my buddys has an amazing video editing machine, but he only has a total of 400gig HD space!

yes I know I could have built two server's for the price of the hard drives, but this server serves a purpose, yep Joe are right on one end, this server also serve's as a digital video and archive scatch disk, its video editing machine is located across a couple of states through an OC-12 backbone, its a project im testing out for a client, they want to down size their editing network and they just opening up a location near me, so we came up with the idea to have all video images dumped to a remote location , its been a learning experience so far

Wow, i can only imagine the bandwidth bill :) I spent a few weeks surfing around a home video forum, some of the computers were amazing, 10,000+ machines for home use... I can only dream!
