Hey first post in about 5 months!
I have a backup of a mysql db from an older version of vB (pre 2.5 or whatever were in now). Im going to a new host. Can I put the backup from the older version into the latest vB or should I install old vB, import mysql backup and then upgrade to latest version.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

ideally you should

1. make a more up to date backup of your live vB database
2. move this more recent backup to new server
3. create a new empty database on new server
4. import recent backup into new empty database on new server
5. upload your live vB's php files to new server
6. change config.php on new server to make the database point to the name of the new empty database you created on new server

that's it

moving guide at http://vbulletin.com/manual/movingservers.html :)

Actually, my board has been down for the past 5 months. Just got busy with other stuff. So the backup is the most up to date that I have. But it's from about December of last year. Is that going to be a problem- any new tables or changed names that will be empty or erroneously named in the latest vb?

Thanks for your help,
Peter

i see... my instructions are the same except steps 1 and 2 will instead involve uploading your old backup to new server

and you'll have a step 7 to do..

step 7 would be for you to upgrade to the latest vB version from instructions at http://vbulletin.com/members/upgrade.html

Sorry to complicate the scenario but...
I dont have the old version of vB. I just have the old db and the latest version of vB. Is there anyway to get this db into it effectively without first having the old version running, followed by the upgrade.

Could I install latest vB, make empty db, import old db into empty db and point the config to the new db? In other words, will a db from 2.1 run into into any problems being imported into 2.2.5.

Thanks
Peter

PS perhaps there is somewhere that I could get an old version of vB for download???

All you need to do is import the old db into a freshly installed forum, edit config.php accordingly, then run the specific upgrade scripts to upgrade the db from the old version to the new one. Upgrade instructions are here:

okay you need to

1. upload old backup to new server
2. create a new empty database on new server
3. import old backup into new empty database on new server

So this is what I did:
1. clean install of latest vB (including step to setup board admin)
2. import old db (which I assume has old admin info)
problem: neither the new or old admin/pass combo works...
3. ran the upgrades
same problem....

any ideas?
Peter

Smachol wrote to import the old db into a freshly installed version of vb and run the upgrades which is what i did. But something is not right...

Also what version were you upgrading from and what scripts did you run?

"Same problem" refers to the problem mentioned under 2. :
problem: neither the new or old admin/pass combo works...

upgrading from 2.20 so I ran uprades 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.

Thanks,
Peter

When you restored the db it wiped out the new install and database, including the new Admin user you set up. As for the old Admin login, can you login into your forums with it?

no, it says wrong password, although I did open the db to check it, and the forums wont display...hmmm...I can try it again but Im pretty sure I did what I should have done...

Thanks for your help,
Peter

Try this. Register a new account on your forums. Then upload getadmin.php (it's in the 'extras' folder of the zip file) to your admin directory and run it from your browser. After you've promoted the account to Admin, delete this file immediately.

Well, the forums dont show up, so I dont think I can create a new member. I mean the mydomain/forums/ doesnt display anything anymore....hmmm...Ive tried a reinstall but same result.

just to confirm:
i installed 2.25, imported old db into new db, ran the upgrades from 2.23 (17 and 18), but cant login and cant see forums anymore.

Any ideas on what might be happening? Other people having similar problems or is this unusual.

Thanks again,
Peter

PS what about getting the old vb version, installing that, importing the db, then running the upgrade. Would that be any different? If so, is it possible to get vB 2.2.3 ?
