View Full Version : User Table Rename

What's the chances of renaming 'user' to 'users' (or something similar) for version 3.0 (assuming this table survives to version 3.0)? The reason:
A friend of mine inadverdantly created the vbdforum database in the mysql database during a recent recovery. The vbdforum user table overwrote the mysql user table pretty much destroying his mysql database.
I'm not looking for any sympathy here, a simple backup could have prevented too much trouble, but this is very easy to do even if a backup is present.

Highly unlikely.

Lol, short and sweet reply. Hehe.... Actually, users makes more sense anyway since it's more than one user but whatever.

Using plural table names is actually bad database design.
The user table doesn't really descibe "users" in so much as database design is considered. Instead the table name describes the object that it hold which is a USER.

CRitchie: Maybe this hack (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38030) is what you search for. Please note that it currently is in BETA state...

Well not to get into design and naming conventions...
I understand 'users' is a bad name from a design standpoint I'll give you that. I've used the same argument myself on naming tables in the plural.
So I put forth 'member'.
I like that hack. I shall look into that one. Thanks. It is a much more useful answer than "Highly unlikely."

It's highly unlikely that the name of the user table will change in v3.

You were asking what are the chances, and tubedogg said it is highly unlikely to happen.
If you were looking for a hack, you shoul've posted this thread someplace else.

Highly unlikely because.....
But whatever, sorry if one of your customers has offended anyone.

It is highly unlikely because it would require a complete rewrite of the system and extensive testing which would most likely delay the release of vB3 by months.

*Looks at database tables named vbstats_options and vbstats_countries and calendar_events*
Some people don't follow that lil way of designing a database.

The 'vbstats' tables are from a hack.

I can't wait to get my hands on v3. I wish you guys would let slip a few screenshots or something to give us a clue.

I don't think that he means a picture only showing the copyright ;)

Neither do I... There has a been a screen shot of what the new calendar looks like, what the new User Profile Fields look like and more.

There's also a picture of the new optional threaded view - although that may be over at vbulletin.org instead.

I know one screen shot of vB3 posted here was removed...
...and the mystery thickens...
"...open beta.jelsoft.com...!" a plaintive voice cried out from somewhere in the fog below. desperation gripped me as i ran through the consequences of the act i was about to commit.
"do i do what they ask?" i wondered aloud. "do i risk uncovering what has been kept secret for so long?" i knew that either way, there would be grave consequences.
but i was compelled to answer that lingering cry.
