are you writing 3.0 all over again or using the same vb2 code?

hypedave
Mon 20th May '02, 9:12pm
I believe they are writing it all over again, because none of the hacks that work for 2.2.X will work for 3.0

I think I have read it is based on vB 2.2 but - there will not be much original code left in vB3 ;)

There are parts of vB2 that have undergone only minor rewrites to fit in with vB3, but the underlying code (the core) has been pretty much completely rewritten.

Most hacks won't work, but most will need only minor rewrites to make them work with vB3.

Hmmm... I don't quite believe you, Kier... I think I will require physical evidence to corroborate your claims about vB3...

If you agree that it is in your best interests to send me a copy of the vB3 source, please do so. It will help resolve the mystery surrounding vB3 and only enhance your credibility...

Out of 600+ hacks available for VB2, it is doubtful that a majority of them will become standard features.

Since most hacks available at vbulletin.org aren't for everyone, that doesn't leave a big selection of hacks that will be useful and needed by everyone.

That's probably why they won't make a lot of them standard features.

Is the beta going to be upgradable to the full release version? My bosses are getting very impatient with vB and I want to implement the vB3 changes ASAP.

How is the beta coming along BTW?

J'ai une question aussi. :D

Will the admincenter be totally remade over? If so, give it a cool look... :) No more purple.... Lol.

Btw, will the vbStats option be available in vB3?
Also, that proxy detector from vb.org is a must.... Very useful.

Ok, I've been trying to get this one hack done for....well, since I can't remember.

To the developers: Have you ever taken a look at "SnowBoards". It's mainly a BBS for very busy corporations. Examples of these forums are GameShark Boards (http://boards.gameshark.com/) and the IGN Message Boards (http://boards.ign.com/)

If you delve a bit further into the system, you'll notice that the moderators, vips, and admins/managers have colored user names (globally, if I might add). This means, in private messages, threads, forum views, and everything else. They can change their colors through an option in their control panels instantly, given that they are in a required position.

...Can we please have this in vB3??!! :)

Is that true throughout the entire board?

Yes it works for the whole board, but you can only set it from the Admin CP (at least that's how it works now).

Will vB3 be able to successfully nest 3 quote tags?

tubedogg

Quote tags *could* be successfully nested now, but that ability was disabled for sanity & server load purposes.

Are threaded views the same thing as the look of like a bravenet board? If so, it's ugly. :) Anyway, I wish they'd enable nesting.... It's so annoying in PM's where the reply sticks quotes in and if you constantly pm back and forth then the tags get messed up constantly and you gotta delete them.

But in regards to nesting tags, recursive regular expressions have been extremely problematic everytime I've tried to use them.

How about having the Star Wars theme from Episode I (Duel of the Fates) play in the background in the Admin CP?

Now that would be a feature that would sell the product.

>> Will vB3 have prefix in table names ?
Ex: vBulletin_user

I think that vB3 will need some tables changes so it would be interesting prefixing the tables names to clarify the database.

I don't really need it personnaly but i heard it have been requested.

Bonne journée à tous ! :)

JamesUS
Tue 28th May '02, 3:25am
We have discussed table prefixes but have not decided whether to include them yet or not.

DirectPixel
Tue 28th May '02, 10:13am
I agree, they could come in handy for people running more than one board off of one database. However, it would promote people running more than one copy of the script.

But...it would open the door to hacks similar to the style drop-down, except the user switches content instead.:D;)

XiXora
Tue 28th May '02, 11:28am
make it a fixed prefix then. i hate installing another script but i cant because it usuaully uses the same tbale ( user :p )
this encouraged me to make my own scripts :p
but i would have prefixes if they were changeable or not

What would be different than by now ?

Personnaly, don't need it, i run my own dedicated server, but a lot of users had shared hosting and it would be more clear ...

So, wait & see :p

CeleronXT
Tue 28th May '02, 6:24pm
Hmmm.... During installation or in config file, you should be able to chose the prefix. That way you could install more than one thing in database or another vB itself.

bigmattyh
Tue 28th May '02, 9:10pm
The prefixing feature would require a lot of work and testing, I would assume. I think most of the people who would really need it are those whose sites are hosted on a shared platform and are limited to only one MySQL database. And a few who just want to keep all their data in one database.

So the question is: Is there a large enough segment of the vB population who would need this feature to justify the coding and testing time to implement it?

Very important question: at the moment i use the "Avatar Link" hack, which makes possible that the avatars are on remote servers of users.

question: will be this feature in the vb3 ??

if yes, will it be possible to export all the "avatarlinks" mysql table to the new vb3 feature?

thanks!

XiXora

hacks are not supported by the vB dev team

maybe a hacker can export it :P ( if this kind of feature is included )

dslteam
Wed 29th May '02, 4:08pm
sure, but my question is: if vB3 will support such feature like remote avatar ?

Steve Machol
Wed 29th May '02, 4:14pm
I just checked the beta and it does not support this.

JamesUS
Wed 29th May '02, 5:09pm
There are currently no plans to support remotely stored avatars, as this often results in broken links and can be a bandwith drain on other hosting companies/servers. I know a lot of users on forums that offer this host their avatar on f2s or similar and have had accounts terminated with the free hosts as a result.
