I'm currently making a custom forum much like VBB. It's very close to being done and I plan to release the coding for free. I am wanting to have an install page much like on VBB. I'm wondering, how does this work? How do you get the user's username/password/host info and store it? What major steps are involved in a simple install page for a forum? If someone could explain this to me, I'd be very greatful.

your saying you designed a complete forum but you can't figure out how to do the installation?
*sigh*
before you install the user has to modfiy a config file (or you can just get your install script to write the config file according to the user information that they provide you. you then write your tables to the database. Add core info to the database and you are done.

Well, I still don't understand something. I understand how you would obtain the database information. I'm wondering, what would you use to store and recall it?
And as for your doubts, you can view the script so far at http://pixelnet.myip.org/index.php
It's hosted locally until I finish the script so it'll only work when I'm online and if you can access it, it's most likely mind-numbingly slow. But there's your proof, Conscience.

With all due respect, the vBulletin forums are not the place to get help writing a new forum that could possibly compete with vB. I suggest you concentrate your efforts at forums specializing in coding and PHP in particular. Good luck!
