problems with mysql

for some reason no matter what selection i make in phpmyadmin, i cant get integers above 255, no matter whether i select smallint, tinyint, bigint or anything.

is there sum hidden trick to doing it?

upgrade to the newset version of phpmyAdmin, if already then I would reinstall it.

I'm using it, and you don't have to install it, it's just PHP files in a directory, deleting them and puttin identical ones in instead won't change a great deal.

well the only reason I say that is because I had a problem with an image in one version of phpmyAdmin and when I deleted it and re-installed it, same version, it worked fine. I mean by re-install it is put new files it, ones that have not been edited if you edit yours.
