Ok, I need to ask this before I spend more time on it.

I am trying to integrate PostNuke with vBulletin. Whilst it is quite difficult because vBulletin's structure is much different from that of PostNuke's I am willing to spend the required time.

The question is one: Will vBulletin 3 be backwards compatible with vBulletin 2? Because if for example the database structure and all the templates are changed then it will take the same amount of time to upgrade...

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks

In terms of the PHP files and templates, almost everything will be new with 3.0. I honestly don't know what changes are being made to the database, but I suspect there will be enough changes that while you will be able to upgrade from 2.x to 3.0, there will be no downgrade path. Also a 2.x database will not work unless it's upgraded to 3.0. That's really not much different than now. You can't run a 2.0.3 database in 2.2.5 and vice versa.

As for PostNuke and other hacks, virtually all of them will have to be rewritten for 3.0.

/me grits his teeth as his new site -- integrated highly with vB -- goes online in less than a week... hoping he won't lose a week of his life to convert everything over to the new system... but in the end, he knows his hope is empty...

But mitigated by his high hopes and insuppressible anticipation for vB3!

Load up on vitamins and other life-saving necessities (snacks, coffee, soda) needed to make the transition as painless as possible. Also, a good support-team for backrubs etc. might be just what the Surgeon General ordered.

*sigh* there goes all my hopes.

Will the user authentication system change as well? As a concept only I mean.
