Most dedicated servers seem to have bandwidth charges from around $2.50 anywhere up to $10. Anyway, mine is $3 but it is 95% billing which means it is effectivly a bit more than that unless i am lucky.

As people who have a dedicated server are far more likely to use the included bandwidth than people on virtul accounts there is none of the "well we give them lots of bandwidth included because we know only about 1 or 2% of them are going to use it" in the same way you can get 300MB webspace for $19.95/month basically because they know that hardly anyone is going to use that much.

So the same applies to bandwidth. Who knows of good virtual hosts that don't have a problem with a 50GB bandwidth pull. This can then be used for graphics (smileys, avatars, link icons) all the i suppose non-essential stuff and will also take a bit of load of the server... still the lower bandwidth charges are what is important.

Eva2000 uses http://website.yahoo.com/
now their current prices are:

$39.95 for 30GB which is $1.30 / GB - not bad. Also get 200MB so plenty of room for everything.

Any other suggestions? what about isps? some UK ones i hear don't seem to care about bandwidth or have no mesaures installed to even know.

Thanks everyone...

never heard of this one but:

http://64.176.69.121/hosting_plans.php

get 10GB for $10/month.

Also mySQL and PHP which is quite useful for testing i guess.

hey you can add spaceports.com/terra-byte.com to the list but really this is only a short term solution as some hosts aren't gonna like it

there's also aplushosting.com which under special arrangements such as placing their logo on your site you can get a better deal. You can also get image only serving accounts such as my friend phillip from animewallpapers.com site has done.

then if you are a admin geek and know your way around a server - a dedicated server from http://www.maxim.net would be nice with an included 0.5Mb line ~ 160 GB/month with their servers - but if you can't admin it, it would be expensive as they charge US$200 per domain setup

what are you looking for ? ideally i mean for your plans ? I really love your site's concept and had even plans to development my own sci-fi sites, but lack of time and money to devote to it has held off my plans.

Well a number of things:

1) Expanding the forum a lot. It has only been going a few weeks but we get 15 members per day already from minimal promotion and the odd dollar at goto.com. Co-branding is going to kick it off a lot i realy hope, already setting up some sites that want to use it.

2) Science Fiction directory. Not really a really good one out there, either they go along the line of "can't use images in our site because some people don't have image capable browsers!" or they only have a few sites. Want to use Links SQL and get a mini sci-fi DMOZ.com going.

3) Then want sci-fi sites. Own http://www.farscapefan.com and http://www.andromedafan.com and want to run those. Got someone doing screenshots, making almost 5/10MB a month. I know someone who runs a stargate screenshot place with a bandwidth of over 60GB.

There is quite a lot more. The problem with this type of area is it does not seem highly profitable although it should be considering it being a niche market and those into it are often big spenders on merchanidse. Sciencefictionshop.com should help address that i hope. The forums have only just started and we are still only at about 2,500 to 3,000 page views per day on that. Really need to increase that 10 times to get the money to afford to run the next projects.

Out of interest eva, what do you do for selling banners? We have a similair type of niche market so would go for the same type of thing albeit different i would think. UGN.com looks good in the future once the site expands (1,000,000 they need i think) but no idea what their CPM or CPC is. I get about $0.90 CPM from my top banner and about $0.65 CPM from bottom (which is a CPC) so it is not much and dosen't pay for the server yet (about 1/3 of it) but i recon it will pick up over next few months.
