Chris,
Perhaps you can answer this. We already tweaked my.cnf as per your suggestions, and this is what our memory states right now:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1036000 999772 36228 20056 726188 52776
-/+ buffers/cache: 220808 815192
Swap: 1036100 796 1035304
Almost all of the 1 gig is used, but in the cache, there is 815 megs free. Are we using this to the best of the server's ability?

woah 530 users?
Not using the cache is good :) If all of the cache was being used you would be in trouble.
Also you need to upgrade to v1.1.4

freddie,
We'll be upgrading to 1.1.4 soon, it's just hard to find an off-peak time to do it. Also, I'm not too good with php3, and I don't want to lose private mail, so I'm waiting till my developer is available to do the hack after we upgrade.
We hit 550 users today, and it keeps climbing all the time.

We're well over 600 people online right now. I'm not tracking the number of posts per day, but pageviews are about 220-250,000 per day.

Alex woah  and the hardware you mentioned before is handling this comfortably ? was it a dual p3 700, 1gb for mysql and dual 500, 512mb for web serving ? i gotta check out some of these savings :D

Yep, the hardware is a dual p3-700 with a gig for the database server and a p3-550 (single) with 512 megs for the web server. RIght now, the load is VERY high on the web server, so we'll be adding another one to load balance. (We planned on this earlier, but did not require it, now we do).
I wouldn't exactly say that we're handling it COMFORTABLY, as loads always peak and then come down to more appropriate levels, but hopefully after we upgrade to 1.1.4 there will be some relief.

Alex-
Hi there.... I would say your memory usage looks fine, you are using the full 1GB and not swapping much to disk, which is very good. Also, adding another web server will surely help with the amount of traffic you are getting.
Which version of MySQL do you have running?
