I've just downloaded the freeware version to see if it will work, before purchasing a BB. I FTP'd the file over to my server.

Now, I need help. I had to open the files and chose wordpad. Was that a mistake? I can't seem to change it, so perhaps I should delete the whole thing and start over with a new download?

My Windows is 95 - does that mean that I cannot use this BB at all?

Thanks,

Joy

Hi, Martin. I'm not sure - I've written to our host and as soon as I hear back I'll let you know.

Dear Martin,

Ive just heard from our host that their servers are compatible with win 98 and higher.

Joy that does not really make sense. Server runs one operating system or another. Either is is linux (of which there are a few flavours) or windows (of which it is almost certainly NT). There are other options but it is likely to be one of these.

The type of operating system you have on your home computer (win 98, win 95, mac, beos etc) has nothing to do with this and you can edit a text file on any of these and upload it and there will be no problem.

The host was probably refering to add-ons like FrontPage Extensions, WebFolders, Office Extensions, Visual Interdev and other Microsoft products.

If these don't jive with the version of the tool your using you can't use them.

Edit the files before you FTP them to the server. I wouldn't use WordPad though. Use Notepad or one of its feature rich replacements like TextPad (http://www.textpad.com).

Just a question here...

Did you unzip the copy of vBulletin you downloaded before uploading it to your server?

Hi, Thanks for comments. i think when they said windows 98 'or higher' they were referring to windows 2000, but that is just a guess.

I did unzip the file before ftping it.

I am going now to try to do as you suggest, and edit it in notepad. I may delete everything I have and start over with a fresh download.
