Never encountered this before, but after some upgrades on our server, I noticed that vBulletin would sometimes output encoded garbage instead of html. (see attachment)
Turned of gzip in vBulletin and haven't seen it anymore. Hope that solved it...
Anyone else ever ntice anything like this?
(And yeah, we still have to upgrade vB :D )

not sure, but i think it is related with php.ini file:
zlib.output_compression = Off
if you install gzip, zlib should be off.

zlib compression is off...
I checked the httpd error log, and in the last 24 hours there were a few errors like below:
[error] mod_gzip: TRANSMIT_ERROR:32
[error] mod_gzip: TRANSMIT_ERROR:ISMEM:32
Those errors ONLY show up in the last 24 hours, but the gzip problem was present before that. My guess is that they've showed up in the last three days (but nothing in any log).
This didn't happen before.
Any upgrades we did was a week (or a little more) ago.
I checked on the errors, and apparently they show up when the server is transmitting data to a client, and the client cut off the transmission (by simply surfing away, or hitting the stop button).
If that's true, then the error happening and the ones showing in the log are not related.

yes
error] mod_gzip: TRANSMIT_ERROR:32
[error] mod_gzip: TRANSMIT_ERROR:ISMEM:32
are to do with client ending the page loading before it compeletes..
as to the first problem what browser and browser version are you using ?
do you have browser caching set to automatic or every time page loads ?
what do you have set for your vB admin options -> http headers and output settings ?
do you have both mod_gzip and vB's gzip enabled ?

>do you have both mod_gzip and vB's gzip enabled ?<
I did have both enabled. It's been like that since the beginning, and it never caused problems. I have vB's gzip option disabled now, and the weird output hasn't been back since.
Basically all "HTTP Headers and output" options are off.
I first thought it was because I upgraded apache, but that was days before this showed up.
About the TRANSMIT erors, I thought it had something to do with a chat hack I created. The timeline on that is about the same period.
I crosschecked appache's error log with the access log, and it's not the chat hack. It's the forum itself:
Some log entries (first line is error log, the one below access log):[Sun Mar 24 09:10:48 2002] [error] mod_gzip: TRANSMIT_ERROR:ISMEM:32

Notice anything odd? I did, but don't let the above fool you. In every case IE 6.0 is envolved. Every time NT 5.0 as well in the examples above, but I've scanned the logs further, and I found the same with a combo of win98/IE 6.0.
Now I'm confused. Is it a M$ problem? Is it something on our server? Why didn't this happen before?
Oh, browser caching is set to automatic, at least with me (NT5.0/IE6.0)

Well, it's no disaster. This thing keeps popping up, but everything is still running. Nothing to worry about.
In each case IE6 is involved. Still nothing to worry about.
But also in each case forumdisplay.php is the one being called...
I'm still running vB 2.2.1. Are there significant changes in 2.2.4 that might have "patched" these kind of errors? Or will this error also show up with new(er) versions of vBulletin?
It might be interesting to know why this happens exactly...
