View Full Version : Incorrect displaying of backslashes in posts

When typing a back slash followed immediately by a single quote, the backslash does not show up. To display the following, I have to use two back slashes.
\\'
but if I use a double quote, it does things properly and I only need one back slash.

See the examples in this post.

The post above posted exactly like it was supposed to - the first two each had one backslash and the second two each had 2.

So you think I made it all up?
Did you click 'edit' on my posts? Try it and you will see how many back slashes there are.
Hmm... I just tried it again and it worked. But if you edit the original post and look, there is definately a slash there that doesn't show up.
\' one slash and one quote
\\' two slashes and one quote
Has somebody changed something to make me think I'm cracking up? :(

That rolling eyes emoticon is really annoying.
I apologize for my comment, however, my response was made in that tone because you didn't acknowledge there was a problem. As you mention above, you obviously saw there was a problem but you chose to simply say it works as it's supposed to. Unless you can see two slashes in edit mode and view mode in my original post, there obviously is or was something wrong.
It's not as if it's a serious problem and I wouldn't be making this follow-up if it wasn't for those rolling eyes.
Anyway, it's been acknowledged by smachol (thank you) so I'll forget about it. I'm sorry to be a burden by making maybe two or three problem reports in almost 2 years. I'll try not to bother you anymore.

I believe it has to do with preg_replace() and how it escapes slashes actually. If you use a bbcode in a post (like so), I think it'll happen:
\' <-- one slash
\\' <-- two slashes
It's a pretty major undertaking to get it fixed I think, just because of all the PHP version possibilities, bugs, etc. I'll move this thread to the bugs forum and we'll try to work on it for vB3, but no guarantees.

Talk about getting down to the nitty gritty....... eh Mike? ;)
If that's all there is for bugs......wow! :D Your life must be pretty boring oh... uh.... forgot.... vB3.0 is on it's way. :)

Just curious. Does this say fixed because it's fixed for vB 3.0, or is it also going to be fixed in 2.2.6?

I don't see 'fixed' anywhere in this thread. And what part of Mike's post did you not understand?

The title of this thread was [Fixed] Incorrect displaying of backslashes in posts.
I guess it was removed so people would not think it was fixed for 2.2.6, but that it was origianlly put there because it is fixed in 3.0, but before 2.2.6 was announced. If you don't believe me, I can check the cache of the other machine, and take a screen shot of it.

Have you, personally, found the usage of your forum to be degraded by this particular anomaly?

Freddie, I could not quite tell if you were being sarcastic with that comment. And no, the usage of my forum has not been degraded, but I just like having well written sofware, without any known bugs. It makes me feel more comfortable if I know that the programers attempt to fix all known issues, even if there are some elusive ones that cannot be solved.
