View Full Version : In the quest for the perfect host

I've given up trying to find a free host. But here's what I need, and I'm willing to pay up to ~$25/year for it (I know I'm crazy :p):

PHP/MySQL (duh)
At least 50 MB space
Domain hosting (I already have a domain so I'll need to transfer it)
More than 10 GB transfer per month, or better yet, unlimited

I've been running vB since I bought it yesterday off my computer and with only 4 users online at one time average my computer has sent the equivalent of 6.81 GB/month

Any takers to my impossible challenge?

First, there is no such thing as unlimited transfer/bandwidth. Any host that tells you this is lying and it will come back and bite you in the ass, I promise you.

Now, with 4 concurrent users on your board, you have not used 6.81GB of transfer in one day. There is just no possible way. I think there is something screwed up somewhere along the way.

Unfortunately your price of $25 a year will buy approximately this:
250MB per month bandwidth
25-50MB of space
MySQL & PHP if you're lucky.

For 10GB bandwidth you are looking at a price of at least $10 a month, at least from any reputable host. The reason is hosts cannot get bandwidth much cheaper than about $.75 a GB and unless they are playing a numbers game (which you will lose, trust me, it may take time but you will lose, not them) assuming you won't use the bandwidth, they will not charge less than their cost.

as kevin said already you'd be hard pressed to find 10GB/mo for $25/yr

4 users is impossible to generate 6GB/month

recheck your stats!

http://www.alivewww.com

I am currently hosted with them, on a Multi-Web Unix package, and I am very happy with the service and hosting.

If you do sign up for them, if you want, in the signup, there is a bit for referal id, and if you want to, and sign up, please put mine in, which is CN100567

Support is really good, with reaplies in under 1 hour, and there are support forums (not vB :( )

All their prices are in pounds, do they take American customers?

just try the unlimited traffic hosts, all you have to do is mail them and ask them to say a speficik # of gb you are allowed to use. Most will let you use about 10gb, heh I got one host that lets me use 90gb/month for 30$ a year :)

Yeah...come back when you get to 5GB
I'm sorry but it is just not possible for them to do it, at least for more than a month or two. They would be eating in upwards of $1000 a year per account. Unless they have figured out how to manufacture money it isn't going to happen.

If the host is also an ISP then they generally don't care about data transfere.

That's not true. They can be AOL and they still have to pay for data transfer. OC48's cost mucho $$ as do the other pipes that provide bandwidth between the actual data center and the internet.

The costs are diffrent for each country, I have found two hosts that can give me practily unlimited data transfere, one is in sweden and the other one is in france (im using this right now). I haven't found any host in the US that can give me that kind of stuff, but that is propably because the internet infrastructure is diffrent, in sweden you can get a 10mbit internet connection for 20$ a month.

I think alivewww.com take US customers :) I know people who use it in other countries than UK, so I guess they do :)

No host can give you unlimited bandwith, and any that claim to be able to do so are not telling the truth.

Bandwith charges in Europe are a great deal more expensive than in America (up to 10x as much) so European (and Australian) providers have even more difficulty in providing lots of bandwith. I suspect you'd find that you'd be kicked off these hosts very quickly if you started using a lot of bandwith. If you're getting 10mbit connections for $20 it sounds like they're not real 10mbit connections.
