mysql hanging.

I'm having a problem with my mysql database...

When we start mysql, it the first instance grabs the port and won't let go. Thus, any other connections can't get the port, so it hangs. I can't even type "sql" to open the monitor w/o it hanging.

Any suggestions would be helpfull. thanks.

would help if we had more details ? version? linux/windows ? how mysql was compiled etc
