EVA2000, back in July, replied to my request for the best 2 server configurations for the Ultimate Server Configuration for a busy forum.

Here is the post:

my ultimate setup for future growth would be probably 2 or 4 server setup

1 or 2 web servers

2U
dual p3 tualatin 1.26ghz with 512K L2 cache
4 gb ram
4 x 73.4gb scsi 10k hdd raid
US$6585

1 or 2 database servers - with mysql replication/backup database server mirroring the database data

2U
dual p3 tualatin 1.26ghz with 512K L2 cache
4 gb ram
4 x 36.4gb scsi 15k hdd raid
US$4665

raid 1 seems to be the best???

prices from acmemicro.com
http://www.8anet.com/cust_list.ihtml?server_id=18

so that's 4 servers for US$22,500

forgot to add: running RH 7.1 with latest 2.4.x kernel

- mod_gzip
- mysql with innodb tables
- Zend Cache (US$2,000 per cpu license i believe)

well i can dream.

My question now for everyone with some expertise in this area is, I will be buying this week to upgrade my configuation. Currently running:

Dell PowerEdge 2400
Dual - PIII 1gig
2 gigs of Ram
3 - 18gig 15k drives
Raid 5
Red Hat 7.1

Using that server above (as server 1) what is recommended as the Ultimate second server and configuration. Be specific. What server will be the mySQL server?

Thanks!

Steven

wow posts from the past :)

i think server prices have dropped alot since then.. so you are the best configuration for a database server ?

i still lean towards intel based servers due to their lower cpu temperatures... did you know the p3 tualatin 1.4 ghz with 512k L2 cache were just released? but i haven't seen a vendor sell them yet

you looking for 1U or 2U casing ?

i haven't bought from any of these guys but might in the future

http://racksaver.com
http://acmemicro.com
http://aberdeeninc.com
http://qsol.com

my revised dream database server :)

2U case
2U
dual p3 tualatin 1.26ghz or 1.4ghz with 512K L2 cache
4 gb ram or 6gb ram with tyan hesl-t motherboard (http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderhet.html)
5 or 6 x 36.4gb scsi 15k hdd raid 5
RH 7.2 latest 2.4.x kernel
Apache 1.3.22, PHP 4.1.1 and MySQL 3.23.47 compiled from source

but really what kind of usage are you getting mysql wise right now ? do you need such a setup now ?

Acme Micro are top people, good prices too. The Tualatins are nice chips too, very swift, same goes for the Tyan mobos. As for racksaver, I heard a not too good thing about one of their servers the other day - fried mobo, couldn't keep up with the constant heat as it wasn't a server mobo.

doesn't seem many vendors have tualatin 1.4 ghz servers out yet
