Alternate user database integration

Can vBulletin be configured/hacked to utilize an alternate database to handle user accounts?

I would rather not require visitors to register for forums if they've already "registered" elsewhere on a site.

This would require hacking. You can check over at the hack site - vbulletin.org. Generally though, people do it the other way around, i.e., use the vB user accounts on the rest of the site.
