Hi,

I run a ubb board and I think about ubgrading to vB.
I understood that i can import all users, forums and posts into vB, cool.

A.) My first question is if this tactic will work:

1.) Install the Lite Version, import all Data from the running ubb.

2.) adjust the layout and language so it looks familiar to our users etc and test if I like vB.

3.) purchase the full version, install it.

4.) take over the styles, templates, language settings etc from the lite version

5.) Kill the ubb and import all data from the ubb again.

B.) This is a strange question: Can I go back from a running vB to UBB if i want to? I mean are there re-import functions somewhere?

C.) what about the PMs? Is there a similar hack for vB and can I import the data from the old ubb in the same manner as the forum-data?

D.) I have php4 running on the server (Solaris, Apache) - anyproblems with that (I see php3 everywhere around here...)

Thanks for your help,

Robertus

1.)

No, can't do that. There is no import utility for UBB --> Vbulletin lite.

The lite version is really just to test if it works on your server ok, and can get everything going. I don't think it is really even meant as a way of testing the features/strenths of the board. You can use one of the many vbulletin boards out there to do that.

As far as i am aware UBB have no utility to go from vbulletin back to UBB. Infopop would never realese it as then they would have to use the word vbulletin on their site :)

PM's.

Yes there is a hack but the new release of vbulletin will have pms in it automatically.

php4 is fine, i am pretty sure that is what i have. But that is what the lite version is for, testing it out.

Problem is that when I see a feature in another board I don't know if it came with the original script or if it is a hack.

Well to see "virgin" boards look at this one, or mine (waitig for new version before i customize).

Also, a lot of hacks that are at peoples boards have been released and most will add them here if you ask. Just check out the boards of the people who stay at vbulletin.com the most - they are the ones who are most likely to release their hacks.

Do what I did, keep the old PM's up and running along side the vB. You can put in a link to check UBB PM's on your main forums page, chances are your users wouldn't know the difference at all. Granted, the vB version of the PM hack is much better (IMO), but at least you'll have all of your PM's in tact.

But there's a UBB PM import script (I think...)

It's defective though. If anyone will allow me to make them a guinea pig, please email me!

Right now, the only defective thing about it is that the dates get messed up (IIRC)

How come it worked for me?

You mean when I used you as a guinea pig... errr... beta tester? :) It imported fine, but the times were FUBAR'd - apparently, I didn't actually pay attention to them.

Ahh, well; I did away with the PM's a while ago anyway, and they are gone-diggity-on.

:)
