View Full Version : Set Up Administrator Problem...

Just went through the set up and all seem to go well through step 8 of the online manual. I then follow the delelte install.php3 installtemplate.php3 page when I press the control panel link I get: "You are either not a valid administrator or have not logged in. Please log in now." Problem is that the password that I have (that I put in with the original config) will not work. Also, it seems to me that I never got step 9 "set up administrator" presented to me to input the user name and password. What have I missed? Thanks!

Sounds like you missed going through step 9 :)
Try re-installing the .zip, and see if it goes to step 9 this time. If not, let me know the error message that it gives you. If necessary, view source on the last page that you are able to complete successfully, and look for anything out of the ordinary. If so, copy and paste it here.

Hy, after re-installing the programm (I have the LITE-Version for trial) I get the same error message: "You are either not a valid administrator or have not logged in. Please log in now."
During the installation I always got the message that everything had been setup successfully. At the end I deleted the two files "install.php3" and "installtemplate.php3". Then I clicked the link to the control pannel and entered the password specified in the "config.php3" file. After this, a frameset appers but in every window I get the message "You are either not a valid administrator or have not logged in. Please log in now." again. It would be great if you gave me specific orders what to do. Thank you.

I have the same problem described above.
Coud it be that the downloadable archive has become cocrrupt?

I wanted to buy vBulletin this week, and aparently my problem is common (I'd say three people with the exact same problem within a day or two of eachother, for no aparent reason, is common). I find it quite disturbing that there is aparent lack of support for real, reoccuring problems. I notice that most of the answered questions in this forum are already answered in the online manual or the readme that acompanies vblite, while serious technical issues go unanswered. After all, the whole idea behind vblite is to test server compatability.
To echo the comments I have read in many older (and unanswered) posts, I refuse to pay over $200 for vBulletin and installation only to find it won't work on a server which far exceeds all of the system requirements.
It looks like I'll have to turn back to UBB (after discovering that the current UB2k lacks way too many features that were in early betas). UBB has never failed to install on any server I've ever tested...

Hello,
I have the same problem described here.
I also re-installed all the stuff. It seems it is a problem with the current release.
I was browsing through the code and it seems to be no step 9...
I am also in a hurry, so please give me a reply.

same problem...
I downloaded on Monday, Oct 16.
I tried the demo control panel and it appears that there are two "text" fields whereas the installed demo on has one.
fyi:
Apache 1.3.12
PHP 4.0.1pl2
mySQL 3.22.25.1
Please let us know. There are many many bulletin board/forum packages out there and if I invest more than a few hours in one without getting it to work, I'll usually find something else. However, if I invest a few hours and it works great, I'll usualy stick with it.
if anyone can recommend a similar package that has less features in exchange for easier setup, please let me know. I looked at phorum, which is open sourced, but it really didn't seem to have the necessary features.
TIA

Try UBB:
http://infopop.com/
It seems nice and I had no problem installing it.

May I say I disgree with that suggestion:
UBB takes up all your web space and costs you a lot of money. Support at their forums is poor.
Opentopic costs the world.
So I say vBulletin is better idea.
But the choice is yours!

I like the feel of vBulletin better, but if I can't get the demo to install, I don't have much faith in buying it! ;)
Is this possibly a php4 and demo conflict? One other thing not mentioned previously, I did have to rename all the files from .php3 to .php and do a global replace in the scripts because my server only parses .php. I assume others did not do this and still have the same problem? If you all did do this and have this problem, maybe we have found the culprit?
------------------------------------------------
- stability/support (incl ease of installation)
- features
- speed
- cost
- must be locally hosted!
based on the first 4 criteria weighted evenly, what would one recommend I should also evaluate besides vBulletin and UBB? Frankly, I'm partial to php/mysql and even more partial to an open source solution. I've looked at Phorum.com, but it just looks like too much work to get it presentable.
I'm currently wading through the hotscripts (php) noise so if anyone else is interested we can discuss our findings.

How about enabling Cookies in your browser? I guess after that your frames wont be empty any longer :D

I got the lite version to work. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I simply was not entering in the password in the config.php file correctly.
(Its not the user password, but the forum password)
I was thrown off because the online demo control panel had 2 areas for user name and password where the demo version only wants the password. Duh :o
Well...I'm glad I didn't rant too much but I will try to wipe the egg of my face and move forward.
