In addition to the above error which is causing display problems on posts...It also seems that any posts replied to after the problem began are disappearing?

I have posted a fix for that user problem here:

The other problem is occuring because you have a smilie with no text in it. The text is the ':)' or ';)' bit. You should be able to sort this out through the control panel.

Another admin tryed to upload a smilie (failed upload) and then tried to use it, it seems. Deleted the entry and all is ok.

Also replace that line in user.php
