View Full Version : ['feature'] URL parsing...

When you post a message and the user puts in a URL, which is followed by punctuation such as a comma, period, etc., the vBulletin parser is including this in the URL. For example:
My name is X and my web site can be found at http://www.xyz.com, if you want to chat go to my chat room.
Notice how the trailing comma got added? It should be checked for trailing characters to avoid this.

The problem is, a comma or a full-stop and various other pieces of punctuation can be valid in a URL - so how do we tell them apart. I will look into this, but I am pretty sure there is not much we can do about it.

Tell me a URL that ends with a comma or a period? I know of none honestly. If you look at MS Word for example, how you type the same situation, it leave the trailing punctuation out of the URL.
Thanks for any help, the severity is medium IMHO.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a single scenario where an url actually ends with a comma, but I have seen dots used in that fashion. You might think that's the same as adding .html or leaving the suffix out completely, but it's actually a fairly common trick to break unwanted web-spiders.
