View Full Version : wishlist: announcements as seperate threads

I currently find the way separate announcements are treated as "posts of the same thread" confusing - I still can't help thinking they are somehow related when actually they are meant to be separate. Further, if you have more than one announcment which ends around the same time many visitors will only see one of the announcements (since only one announcement title appears in the thread list).
I would like the option to have separate announcements appear as separate "threads" rather than "posts of the same thread."

We were actually discussing this a few days ago. I tend to agree with your thinking.
What do others think of it?

I agree with boatdesign's view on this.

Ditto here. One of the complaints I've heard from members is that if they "View New Posts" rather than go into the actual forums, they don't see the announcements.

Yes!
I totally agree with boatdesign. Just a few weeks ago I was confronted with the same thing.

I wanted to put an Announcement into *some* of the forums and subforums. This was a bit of a hassle to accomplish. I think it is much easier if the 'Visible In' dropdown-list is changed into a 'check-box' list, where you just can choose *multiple* (sub-)forums where the announcement will be displayed.
I thought someone already suggested this, but I can't find the post about that. I think it will certainly improve the use of Vbulletin, if you provide a check-box option on this great feature.
So I had to 'write' the announcement-message again and again (copy/paste ofcourse) to put it in multiple subforums. After that I discoverd that a user can NOT reply to an announcement.
So what I did was the following (as seen more or less on Vbulletin.com):
- I created a seperate forum for 'Announcements'
- I put an *real* message into that forum and called it an 'Announcement'. (it's *not* a real Announcement)
- I gave users permission to reply to that message, but they have NO permission to write a *new* thread into that forum.
- At last I put a *real* announcement into multiple forums saying that they all should look into the 'Announcements' forum, because there was a new announcement put into it.
Yeah...... ;)

Well....there are really a few positive things about the way I set it up. (one of them is that it is VERY clear that a new announcement is posted).
But, indeed: I STILL have more or less the problem that boatdesign describes. The *actual* announcement is still a bit user-unfriendly.

i say make it optional which way the vB admin wants an announcement to be shown - having the option to choose is what makes a piece of software that much more powerful :D
