I will try and include a screen capture of the way BuzzPower does this with it's great DHTML web configurator. This has a "see example" like where you can see a highlight of what this area applies to. In other words, some of these areas that you are going to change the color to aren't clear to the beginner what they affect. A popup window with a screen shot and a border image annotation of the thing this setting affects would help.
Secondly, BuzzPower has a color picker. Click the color box and a DHTML dialog appears (see image below) to allow you to select a color. I personally had to have PhotoShop open to select a color, then paste it into the Styles editor. It would be nice to do it all from the built in editor.
