PhpBB3 to VB4.0 passwords

I understand that passwords cannot be migrated, but can someone advise what the system does in this case?
Are users prompted to change their passwords, do I need to create passwords and email them out or something? What's the correct methodology here for migrating users?

When I migrated from another board I simply placed an announcement up (and a forum post) instructing members from the former board to change their password. Also included a link to the reset password page for them to click. After this and sending instruction via e-mail several times they got the hang of it.

You can actually just amend the default login announcement to add the instructions. This is what I did for my members:
