I understand you can change these if you like, but most forum webmasters do not always move away from the default smilies. To be real, these smilies are creepy. Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but serious hire a smilies designer most of your customers approve of. These smilies will stay with vBulletin for how long? 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, etc. (you get my point)

To be a small voice for the vBulletin.org community, I suggest/nominate a well diverse and artist designer such as 'Shelley_c'. I have never used her smiles, but when I requested for an 'unpaid' project she quickly made (2) quick ChocoCat HelloKitty smilies. She is very professional, and the rest of the vBulletin.org community appreciates her craftsmanship. It was because of 'Shelley_c' vBulletin.org has a Graphics section.

Anyways, this is a suggestion, nothing more.

I'll be frank: these current smilies are hideous. I hope they are a placeholder for some magnificent little faces that will replace them, but I highly doubt such is the case.

I didn't think it could get much worse than the previous default set, but I've been proven wrong. :p

Looking at the new smileys I am getting the impression that lipstick was on sale.

A few links to alternate smilies, they are pretty simple to change.

Good, goooooood.

I agree with the OP, if the vB team wants to concentrate their efforts on more important matter in order to get GOLD released quicker, get someone from vb.org to do it. I'm sure they would love the chance and their work is very good. I very much like the ones posted previously by pank in his second link.

Keep up the good work vB team!

Honestly, there is a lot of talent at vb.org that I feel gets overlooked sometimes.

I didn't think it could get much worse than the previous default set, but I've been proven wrong. :p

At first I thought the new smilies were funny & helped liven it up in here a bit.
But, now they are starting to scare me with their golden appearance and bright red lipstick.

These are already slated to be changed.

Thank you. That's good to hear. Maybe package the lipstick smilies up in the free downloads area for those who want to use those as an alternative.

By the tone of your post there schwab2clarkson you are angry with the smilies. You mightn't like the new smilies and you mightn't like change but that's what you get with different versions.

Are you serious, you can hardly see them!! I didnt complain about the first new set, it was much easier to read the smilies expression on the old new ones than these latest ones!! Like we have heard a thousand time since VB4 has come out, there is always someone that wont like it!! Keep up the good work VB!!

There are a huge number of things on peoples to do list at vB. These smilies, while better, may not be ideal. Any chance on re-addressing the issue later?

This thread is marked 'Already implemented'.

Every thing is important, and I kinda agree about admins not adding any new smilies, but I did My members love the variety, they write stories with just smiles.
everyone should take time to stop and ad a smile,:p.
I was happy to find an add on were members can select favorite smiles from the big library so they don't have to open the panel each time. as soon as I have my Arcade in top shape I'm going to look into that.

Those certainly need to change. Especially this one: 36656. I am currently sitting behind a pretty good monitor and really.... its again very simple: an icon needs to represent the function that it performs. It has to be instantly clear to the enduser what an icon does. In this example one can't see the exclamation mark inside of it for example.

I am not crazy about the direction of the new smilies. But it's ok, it's a matter of preference.

Will there be a way to easily de-commission the default smilies, and use the forum's existing smilies instead?

I have a feeling the old ones will have to be manually added to keep them instead, but I understand that's part of a major re-do of the software.

Just don't upload them when you upgrade. That way you won't overwrite what you have there already ;)

The actual canvas doesn't need re-sized. I don't know who designed these but they ought to know this. They have not utilitized the full extent of the canvas and retain such a small portion of the canvas to the smilies and giving the shadow to much space. This is the reason why they lack that emotion the designer is trying to convey. I personally think the actual design (visually) is heading in the right direction but if they become a little more refined and the areas that convey emotion made prominent then you won't have any trouble using the 16px by 16px dimension.

Take it from a user that designs smilies on a daily basis. Below (attachment) is an example that you can still retain a 16px by 16 px dimensionional size and retain the emotion people will come to expect from you. Your giving the shadow too much room that is where your problem lies.

Another reason to keep them 16px is to retain the text formatting and eliminate any breaking or spacing issues. or atleast retain such a size will keep those issues to a minimum.

And... it is -again- (just like in vB3 series) not consistent with the Blog image for reporting a post: 36763. Why not use that image?

This goes for me too. I like the ones I currently use anyways. However, the ones that Shelley has been working on (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=222076) would make a great set of default smilies for vb. And to add to the smilie discussion, I'd love to see a better Smilies Display & Organization (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?323595-Smilies-Display-Organization).
