How to connect to SSH?

Okay, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Please redirect me if need be. I have read the vB guide, and spent the last hour googling, and I just can't figure this out.

* I need to move my forums to a new host.
* I have transferred all my files.
* I have downloaded the database
* I am uploading the database to my new hosting account (HostGator, which says it supports SSH)

The guide says to connect to SSH. How do I do this? I downloaded a program, putty, but on trying to connect to myserver.com it just does nothing.

If someone can tell me what I should do here, please I would be so happy.
